Quick question:

When being moved on a low loader or wagon, were excavators still fully assembled? Were there ever occasions when, say, the jib was removed for transport? I've tried Google but the results are inconclusive.

I think Chris that the jib arm was in at least 3 pieces.

From the crane body the jib widens from a tapered section to a square section and that is 1 piece that probably stays attached

The full square sections maybe 1 or 2 pieces will be removed and loaded

The top section with the top pulley wheel tapers from square to a narrower section much the same shape as section 1 .

Yes.

The BFI film 'Berth 24' has a scene where a brand new crane is being loaded on a ship for export.

The jib is totally removed, and the cab and track unit is lifted as a unit into the ship's hold.

Yes. I recall from my very early days on motorway construction sites that they arrived on site without the jib assembled.
