Update 8 January 2020
We aim to launch phase 2 to the wider veteran community, as soon as practicable, enabling existing veterans to apply for a card. Information on how to apply will be released closer to the phase 2 launch date.

I know quite a few lads who managed to keep hold of theri F1250 on discharge (that's the RAF ID card), I wasn't one of them.

RailGooner

IIRC I had to hand mine over - was happy to do so. The pals and memories are mine forever.

my 1250 also handed in when I 'cleared' from my unit on demob  :'(

will certainly look out for news of the new card being available to veterans, at the moment only have my RAFP Association membership card.

The Q

For those of us already on a pension,  like me,  SWMBO and my dad you'd think they would just send one out.  They already have the addresses

guest311

question is ...

how much will they cost ?

you can already get an 'ID card' but was quite expensive IMHO.

done my time, got my badge, so why not give me an ID card for free ?

after all, it's not as though the cost would be huge compared to what we send overseas each year, and they made millions from flogging of army, navy and air force bases after 'defence cuts'.

:censored: politicians, always ready to send our guys into questionable, if not illegal, wars, with unsuitable equipment / vehicles, but never ready to support them unless shamed into doing so.

got the badge

get the pension

just wonder why they can't use their records to issue the card

I haven't read anywhere of there being a cost* to veterans for these cards.

This is part of a ten year strategy that began in 2018. A strategy that recognises we are not just veterans on one day in November every year. The recognition and support offered veterans by Parliament, the MOD and the public sector has improved enormously over the past 30 years. Long may this continue.

* There might be a cost for some - myself included - who've fallen off the radar. I've moved several times since I left the RAF and have never bothered to inform Innsworth (is it still the centre for RAF personnel admin matters?). So it might cost me a stamp to get my card. :hmmm: I don't think my badge cost me anything.

For your pension you'll have to apply to, Kentigern House in Glasgow, it will then be paid from somewhere in Surrey. (SWMBO gets hers in 5 days time)

As for falling off a radar, I never did that just as well as falling off the top of this one would have not been a good idea.!! (I've been to the top of this very one and several others many times..)

Oh 1250 was the last thing you handed in along with the blue clearance form at Personnel, then you walked out the gate and that was it..

Hi Gang,

It is pleasing to see that the gap between being eligible for an HMF railcard and a Senior railcard is being filled. I only hope that the min fare restriction before 10am that exists on the HMF card is not applied to this one. It is/was a commuting prevention measure. As I don't currently leave the RAF until 59 and 364 days, it should not really be an issue to me. The £30 I pay annually for an HMF card is more than recouped in the amount of rail travel covered.
Pension-wise, you can get in touch through the Gov.uk website and they should sort any addresses out for your payments.
Finally, my radar goes from about 8ft-36000ft......difficult to reach at any height and equally as bad to fall from.

Later,
Stu in EGYP.
A selection of my pictures, real & model ARE NOW to be found at...

I always find things in the last place I look. weird huh??

As this card is not available until Nov 20, just after I turn 60, I'm not sure it will be of any use to me. I could have either an Older Persons card or a vets one.

I'm about to apply for a 'Two Together' railcard as this would give both myself and my younger partner discount on our rail travel.

One thing I do have is a Blue Light discount card, which is available for UK Emergency Services, NHS and Armed Forces personnel, whether serving or like myself, a veteran....

I do have a card from the Defence Discount Service, which IIRC cost about £5.

gives discounts at tons of places and does not need renewing each year.
