My late father made 3 1/2" and 5" steam engines one of which was the LMS Black 5.
I don't have his skills but planning instead on having a Black 5 in his memory of my n gauge track.
I've bought a body inc tender but where will I get the chassis, motor, wheels etc.

The complete things turn up fairly frequently on eBay.

This won't seem helpful but buying a complete working one will probably be cheaper than sourcing the various bits separately. And you won't have to work out where it all goes. The latest retooled Black 5 is a very decent model, way better than the Poole version.

The only way you will get the right parts to fit is by buying a Black 5 chassis and taking it apart!   

It's not clear to me which version Black 5 you are trying to build. The original Poole/early Chinese build was loco driven. The retooled Chinese build one was tender driven. Make sure you know which sort you are trying to build, they are not compatible.

As to sources of parts I suggest:
1. ebay. The link I gave you earlier included listings for spares & repairs bargains.
2. Bachmann spares department
3. BR Lines.
4. Peters spares
5. Demic bins at model shops/traders at shows etc.

As to what you need to buy I'd suggest you get a non working loco/tender chassis and repair that, sourcing spares from the above suppliers.  There are no service sheets for the early version to my  knowledge so without a complete loco chassis for instance to see what you need ( and having bought that you would not need the service sheet anyway)  you'll be in the dark.

I'd agree that the Poole models are easy to get and would be far simpler to buy a complete model, and cheaper. Indeed I'm sure I have one, if you are in the market.
