Having only recently started railway modelling (despite having had a large layout built by my father as a kid), I have been amazed at the breadth of topics that one needs to research and skills one needs to develop. This was highlighted to me today as I worked on my first scratch-built model, a two-track modern engine shed based on a local prototype.

In my background reading about scratch modelling, I had read about the difference that air-brushing or painting model material can make in the appearance of the model, but neither having worked with styrene or used an airbrush previously, I was a little unsure about what to expect. However having taken the plunge, started to build my first model and overcome my hesitancy and uncertainty with respect to how to use an airbrush effectively, all I can say is ... WOW!

The difference between the plain and painted styrene panels is so stark, it is like day and night. It seems to immediately add so much depth to the model panel, such that it almost looks like the panel was produced through a commercial molding or fabrication process. And this is even before I attempt any concerted or dedicated efforts to weather the model.

For anyone who is uncertain of making the jump to try scratch modelling or to experiment with an air-brush, just do it ... The results are just amazing!

Soon. I'm still working on the model, but will definitely post pictures once complete :)

I have posted some photos of the painted and weathered main shed in my Layout Construction thread - https://www.ngaugeforum.co.uk/SMFN/index.php?topic=47342.msg609795#msg609795. I am not sure about the red colour for the roof, but will wait to see if it grows on me before reverting to adopt the same green colour for the roof as for the shed walls.
