What height do people like to have for their back scenic boards.

I know this is going to open a bit of a can of worm, because it is a bit like asking how long is a bit of string.

I am being asked by someone, in Hunstanton, who has very little knowledge of model railways and, I have to admit, this is not my area of expertise.

Let battle commence..................

Mine is only 4" high due the space restrictions when I built it. It really is not high enough so I would recommend going higher if at all possible. 9" for the ID backscenes sounds good to me.

Well, that's just not good enough. Some fount of all knowledge you are!   ;)

Ditape

I go for 12" or 300mm in new money.

I'd go for 12" also - especially if there are buildings of any height (churches etc.)

Depends whether you're viewing/operating from in front or behind the backscene.    If you're behind the layout as I am then not too high as you need to be able to reach over to access the trains and trackwork.  I think mine is about 8" - 10" higher than the track (built in 1995 so can't remember for sure!)

(This photo is deceptive as I brought the height up a bit at the ends of my modules where the Union flag is stuck on, to match N-Club International's standard)

My printer will print banner size paper 1200mm long but only A4/210mm (8.5")  so to increase the height I print a separate sky sheet, same size, cut the sky off the "scenic" sheet, stick the sky sheet to the top of the back board then add the "scenic" bit over that resulting in a height of about 350mm

Unless you have access to front and back of the layout, do the backscene first saves knocking chimneys off buildings and similar mishaps when leaning across the full width of the layout

How many roads must a man walk down ... ... ... ... ... before he knows he's lost!

We operate from inside on Heworth, so the backscenes are 9", which allow us to see over easily enough.

From reviewing the ready made stock, the implication is that N gauge recommended size is 9".  I do like Dorsetmike's idea of the additional skyline on top of the sky-trimmed landscapes.
