Replace your power pak with a 12V 1A regulated DC one.  Not expensive (mine came from an old netgear modem) especially if you know a computer enthusiast who replaces components regularly.
Yours sounds like a 16V unreg type probably ok for larger scale models or wack a 12V regulator circuit in line.
