Hoping someone with more computer "nouse" than me can help .....
Our website is coming up for renewal and the hosting provider's charges have gone through the stratosphere !
Can anyone recommend a good (and cheap !) hosting service and advise me how easy it is to transfer the existing website ?

Mr Sprue

I found the best way to get the cheapest deals was to 'park' my domain names at www.123-reg.co.uk (if your domain name is a .co.uk it is free)

From there you can point your domain name to any host thus avoiding any transfer costs when your existing offer expires, this gives you the freedom to search and set up with a different host at your convenience (unless that is you are committed to a contract period) that suites your budget.

Depends what you need to host your web site? Is it just static pages, or do you need dynamic content, databases, shopping basket, authentication?

Just static pages - in fact I'm wondering whether to just stick with the club's Facebook page. What do people think - is a "proper" website really needed for a small society ?

What do you define as expensive?
I suffered horrendous business cost increases a few years ago, so my own prices went up over the last two years

A website allows anyone to view the content
As above, place the Domain Name with a separate provider
The files can be stored and served separately
In the event of transfer at expiry, the files can be left or deleted, and uploaded again from the stored copy

A facebook page is only available to anyone with a facebook account, so should really only be used to complement a website (similar to Twitter, Instagram, SnapChat, etc)

I've used ICUK / CIX for donkeys ages.  About £36 per year.  Exceedingly reliable and brilliant tech support.

For a static website with pictures, aws s3 is about as cheap as you can get, but it is just a file store which will show your HTML as a website, I use it for https://www.mickster04.com/
I also have to pay for the domain separately. It depends what kind of service you expect from your hosting provider and what kind of features you want/need.
