Hi Guys;

I am (was) a subscriber to the Railway Herald site that is free until the end of this month, when in conjunction with Ian Allan, becomes a subscriber e-mag.

I've just had a look at the first 'new-style' issue and have to say...not particularly impressed.  Even the editorial bleated on about it being a full time job for 2 or more people and this was the only way ahead.

I have to say that these guys had provided a great service and have made a rod for their own backs by being successful.

In this case, I'm going to drop Railway Herald as most of the news (even in an e-mag) is covered elsewhere and the new format does not sit well with me.

Some may say...only £18 per year, 38p per week...Yeah well....that's my choice...the www is a great source of free, willingly given information and I'm not going down a subscription route for something I can piece together elsewhere.

And I don't subscribe to the e-Times either....

If it's supposed to be an e-publication why do they have the pages in columns and even photos that span across two pages?  These layouts are designed for a printed magazine but on screen you're forever navigating and zooming if you want to see everything.  I find those e-viewers difficult to navigate compared with a simple PDF reader - on this one neither the arrow keys nor the scroll wheel do anything, you have to click a triangle at the bottom of the screen to move down, then at the top of the screen to go up to the next column, then somewhere else for the next page.  The other problem is you have to be online to read it - no more saving it to the laptop to read on a train...

Rant over.  But a thumbs down from me so far.

I'm not too impressed at the moment. So far I haven't found any of the site changes to be an improvement. At least the photos are still there. For a while I thought all my photos had gone as well. I shall wait and see for a while.

But Stu, if you don't read the Times you'll never be able to have your lobotomy and become a Rupert. Lol

was a really good site, used it a lot, and found it very easy to use.

now it's a pain in the a**e to try to use, was trying to check some pics for 1980s, but although I managed to get to the 1988 diary, even when you click on dates with white shading, which should open pics, absolutely nothing happened.

certainly NOT an improvement to wahat was a good site.

even logging in doesn't make any difference, so I think that it will end up being deleted from my favourites.

just my view, and they certainly won't get any hard earned beer tokens from me !

My feeling too I have a nice collection of the old PDF versions and I won't be bothering with their new stuff
