When I entered into this hobby I must admit I totally disregarded Steam I thought they were old fashioned, Outdated & Obsolete. But since watching a few very good Steam video's online it's totally changed my opinion. The different classes and variant's it's opened up my appreciation. I'm not sure if this sounds stupid but they seem to have a soul when steamed up and you hear what I can only describe as the piston and cylinder and the explusion from the chimley what a sound.

The Mrs bought me a Graham Farish 5MT Standard Class and just watching the train I can only appreciate the amount of engineering that went into both the original full scale and model version. I will be getting more and trying to read up more about the different Classes available which seems to be never ending  :beers:

Just my thoughts, Thanks for reading, Chris

Glad you've seen the light. :)

^^^ what he said ^^^

I always think there is far more variety & character in steam locos, diseasels are just boxes on wheels, the only things that differ are size and number of wheels.

Steam locos come in many shapes and sizes and one can see how they evolved over the  135 years or so before they gave way to diesels which now don't look much different to the LMS and SR ones of the 1940s, almost 70 years ago.

Southern page has a 404 error for the N class, and incorrect information re the Q class, saying it was built 1924/5, actually built 1937/8 also it was not a derivative of an SECR type, in fact the wording would be more or less correct for the N class not the Q.

I have a preference for steam but like diesels too. I'm not so sure about DMUs and EMUs but I think it depends on what you grew up with.

Nothing is quite like the sight sound and smell of a steam locomotive, I really like to go and see the real thing as often as possible.

With the UK having so many preserved railways you can quite easily model the latest modern stock and have a few steam locos too.

They were of course, filthy dirty polluting beasts, but are such a part of global transport history, how can they possibly be ignored?

I like diesels too - that's why I model the 50s-60s transition period. I can run both. It also happens to be the period of my youth, so there is a nostalgia aspect as well.

Steam locomotives, when in motion, extrude a sense of mass which diesels don't  seem to do. (For me, at any roads).
Vision over visibility. Bono, U2.

They certainly were dirty polluting beasts so perhaps it's good that now we only see them at their clean and shiny best at preserved railways.

They were at their worst towards the end of steam, they seem to have been well cared for before WW2.

Don't get me wrong I love my Diesel too as there was no steam when I first ever went to a railway station, But I have a new appreciation for steam. I do like a Class 37 getting 'thrashed'
