I hesitated about placing this post in the Discussion section because it's a Qs about a loco.

However, that section (locos) of the Forum says in the introduction it is for reviews - which this isn't!

So, my Qs is this: what is the best way to convert the bogies of Farish class 66 to take the Dapol easi shunt couplings

Thanks in anticipation

Im guessing you are talking about the non NEM version, I'm currently away for the next week and a half, but i can post some pictures of how I did it when I get back, however you will need the conversion pack dapol do.

However mine have been done by removing the old coupling and then fixing the inner part of the NEM coupling kit into the existing pocket. to fix it using a small pin vice and a drill to allow the top and bottom lugs somewhere to lock into. it can then be lightly glued to left to pivot.

I just cut and filed the existing non NEM coupling box and Easi-shunt coupling until the coupling was a tight fit in the box and then used PVA glue to hold it in place.  I set the uncoupling pin to the correct height before glueing.  It has proved satisfactory on Neely and will pull 14 container wagons without any problems.

I have tried both methods, I disgarded WAZ's method as it is too easy to cut into the square holes that locate the bogie side frame to the bogie.
I did a slightly different method to Terry's, if you look at the top of the Dapol coupling there are two small square indentations in the moulding just in front of the cross pin. Removing the area marked by the indentations allows the coupling to fit in the slot of the Farish side frame. Pack if required to get the correct height and I use canopy glue to hold it in place. With this method it is easy to reverse engineer if you wish to sell the loco with the original coupling.

Which Farish 66 are supplied with the NEM pocket mod. to the original bogies, Paul?

Thanks

Hello Geoff

Could I ask about something in your post please?

"Canopy glue" ............ I've seen this phrase before but don't really know what it means.

What is it?  What are its properties? What is the brand name?

Thanks for educating me!!

Best

Hi Adrian
To answer both questions
The GF 2015/16 Catalogue does not show any Class 66's with NEM pockets.
Canopy Glue is use by modellers to attach canopies and other glazing, it dries clear and is flexible, I also find that the parts can be eased apart if required. I have also used it on knuckle couplers that kept on disconnecting. The brand I use is Pacer Formula 560.

Thanks to Geoff and Paul for clarifying things for me.

I have EWS liveried 371-384 which I think is fairly current - and it doesn't have NEM pockets!

That's what prompted me to seek guidance from colleagues on the Forum

Canopy glue is very similar to PVA wood glue but holds things together better. Its also safer than SUprglue in that it wont fog glazing and can be removed later. I use it to fix most of my Dapol Easi Shunt couplers so they dont droop but you have ot be careful it doesnt get into the outer NEM box. However if it does its easily removable so you can start again. I use Terrys method above but another method shown to me by Gordon is to fir the inner NEM box form Dapol conversion pack . This will then allow the coupler to be sapped to an NEM rapido coupler. It involves opening out the old rapido slot in the 66 bogie, drilling a hole and cutting off the whiskers to the inner NEM box. Gordons locos are fine but I havent perfected it quite right yet.
