Yesterday, there was this picture on The Railway Centre (http://www.railway-centre.com/):

I was wondering whether there was a craftman that could modify a Dapol HST to reproduce it with a very good result (as if it was an RTR engine).

It would mean modifying the head lights, changing the road numbers (is that really possible without altering the painting?) and adding the name plate "Sir Kenneth Grange".
Any suggestion?

Steven B

It would be easier to get one with the correct light cluster and repaint it into blue/grey livery.

One of the respraying companies such a Millfield Models should be able to help.

Happy modelling.

Millfield Models are perfectly fine for a generic repaint
You are probably looking at about £75 for a basic repaint modification for a Class 43 in Blue / Grey livery

However, for detail like this you really want to be using Mercig Studios
For about £120 this would also be a basic repaint modification
However, it would double for detailing and nameplates
Sadly the original model paint colour is matt, so a full repaint would give the best results, especially when a loco is ex-works and shiny (reflective), and that would add around another £100

I know which option I would go for, as it is a one-off project
Just remember there are two locos, but the other loco could be completed to a more basic specification

I have copied pic link to Dapol as a possible for the future - reasonably easy as art work exisits all it needs is translating on to a shell with twin lights and roof deflector.
FWIW the TPM HST etch has additional light option so it might be easier to put on a farish one. I just lookforward to GWR doing the other car to match - a bridge too far for a coach set  but would turn heads if they did.

And putting the original seat configuration back in as well, so that we don't all have to sit with our kness up around our ears  :veryangry: :veryangry: :veryangry:

How do you mean? There's only one power car in this livery, so the easiest thing would be to get a Dapol set in FGW livery and have one of the power cars repainted, as suggested by Steven B above.

Note that in addition to the name plate there is also a '40 years' plaque between the luggage door and the cooler group, and although the cab on the real thing is glossy the bodyside is more matt due to it being vinyled (the cab is painted) - so for a model you could reasonably go for either a matt or a gloss finish.

An HST is two Class 43 locomotives and several Mark 3 coaches or two Power Cars as they were originally known
Even though there is currently only one locomotive in this livery to recreate a full train would be as above

Why would a second power car be completed to a more basic specification? Even if it existed IRL. I am also wholly confused. He's not scratch building the set, so on the presumption he buys a FGW set (and wished to repaint both power cars in the heritage livery) then they'll be exactly the same. ???

If you wanted to recreate a whole train as they were originally, you would just buy the one in the original livery. Presumably the point of a model of this particular power car is to run with other modern-day stock, in which case it would correctly be used with a FGW blue power car and trailers.

I'm not in work at the moment but I regularly travel from Swindon to Bristol Temple Meads so will keep an eye out for this and will let you all know what the set-up for the use of this power car is!

It's just used as a standard power car on the blue sets - there are loads and loads of pictures of it on the web.

Split this up and post on NGF Sales??

As discussed, it's the newer style of light cluster, plus the livery isn't exactly the same. Repainted FGW power car would be a better choice, particularly as I imagine the market for an HST set minus one power car would be limited!
