Just set up our new surround sound system. All works fine but for one thing.

According to the blurb I can set up the Sky box audio to go through the sub woofer. After connecting up the cables to audio out left and right I get sound but can't control the volume. With the volume of the Sky box and the telly set to zero I still get sound from the woofer. I tried going direct from the telly but this time I get no sound.

Instructions are very basic. Any one had similar issues when setting up their surround system?

I run my Sky box on surround sound with no problems.  It might sound silly, but have you got the cables in the right places? 

What system have you got? Does sound inputs go to the woofer and are all speakers connected to the woofer? Or is there a separate amp?

I have not got Sky (TiVo) but what I hink you will find is that the volume of the line out is fixed and is not controlled via the Sky box. Instead the volume would be controlled by surround sound system... This is in effect what happens with your telly speakers.

This means you have to use multiple remote controls, or splash out on a Harmony One. You won't be disappointed!

Tank, double and triple checked connections.

Flakmunky, It's a Inspired Linstening system. Inputs go from DVD player to woofer and all speakers are connected direct to woofer. Instructions say that if I want to listen to an external source, such as a telly or sat systems then I have to connect via the Audio out left and right. Even with all three remotes, telly, Sky box and DVD player at zero I still get sound and can't control it.

The DVD is connected to the telly by HDMI cable the Sky box by Scart.

Very frustrating.

Hi Alex - I have a similar issue as I have plugged my surround sound speakers (Pioneer) from my hi-fi into the the surround speaker sockets in my Panasonic telly and even when I mute the sound on the telly, I still get sound through the surround speakers

That's because the TV and the Surround Sound are two different systems, so you either use the TV or the Surround.

as a last resort, you might be able to use a 3.5mm -> 2xRCA lead to connect the headphone out on the TV to the sub, then you would at least have some control.

I've Googled that system and can't find it. Without knowing the system in any detail I can't help much.

Is it an 'all-in-one' system, i.e. an Inspired Listening DVD player that connects to an Inspired Listening Sub-Woofer with connections out to all of the speakers? Or is it just a speaker system you are connecting up to your existing DVD player?

WRT the connections, can you clarify / confirm the following, please?

DVD player --> TV via HDMI
Sky --> TV via SCART

DVD player --> Subwoofer connected how?

Audio L/R Out from Sky --> connected to what? The sub? And how?

Can you provide some pictures of the rear panel of the sub and the DVD?

Without knowing more about the system, the following is speculation but this is what I think the problem is:

It seems likely that the subwoofer houses the amplifier and the Audio L/R out of the Skybox is 'line out'. This means it is a low level signal that is intended to be amplified by an external piece of equipment, in this case your speaker system. Typically in these situations the line out level is unaffected by the volume controls as you would use your amplifier to control the volume. The SCART connection will be slightly different in that the volume of this signal is controlled. This is because, typically, you would want the purest signal from the Audio L/R line out, bypassing as much circuitry as possible as the amplifier will have better circuitry for dealing with the sound, whereas with the SCART / TV arrangement they are assuming you aren't that interested in fidelity of the sound.

I would look for a volume control on the subwoofer. If it is seperate to the DVD, did it come with its own remote control?

Post up some pics and we'll be able to offer more advice. Hopefully, we'll be able to get you going!


Polo is correct, the headphone to phono connection will work and the volume will be controlled by the TV remote. Indeed, I have my TV connected to my amp in this way for the rare occasions I watch Freeview via my TV.
