Hopefully you wonderful chaps will be able to help.

Has any one manufactured RTR LMS Stanier dining and kitchen car? If not does anyone do them in kit form.

Thanks in advance

There is nothing available RTR.

Etched Pixels do kits for 50' kitchen cars and 68' restaurant cars.

I would recommend the kitchen cars because :

1) you can mount them on standard Farish 4 wheel bogies (whereas the 68' vehicles need kit-built 6 wheel bogies).

2) roof detail is less complicated than for the 68' vehicles.

The other choice is between etched brass sides (that you have to paint yourself) or pre-printed sides. I woud recommend the printed sides because there are no transfers available for the "kitchen car" lettering on these coaches.

If you go the kitchen car route you will need some Stanier open 3rds/open composites to marshall either side of the kitchen car as there is no seating in the kitchen car, in which food would be prepared and then served in the adjacent open coaches.

Last but not least, Etched Pixels is  closed for business at the moment but will be reopening soon so you will need to be a little bit patient if you want to go that route.

The other option would be a D1948 buffet car which I belief is 57' long. For that you would need either a complete kit from Bill Bedford (if that exists), or just the etched brass sides which you could either :

- attach to an Etched Pixels chassis
- attach to a cut and shut Mike Howarth 60' coach kit

Hope this makes some sense ?

Best regards,

Joe

To add to what Joe said ...

The kitchen cars are easier, but the long 68' restaurant cars with the 6 wheel bogies do look good in a rake of ordinary coaches - more fiddly to get running well though.

I think Etched Pixels pre-printed sides (http://www.ultima-models.co.uk/catalogue/lms-printed.html) are only LMS livery - if you want crimson & cream or maroon, you'll need to paint your own. Painting is reasonably straightforward - a lot of the kit can be glued together after painting the sides, roof, and end/underframe separately.

Worsley Works (http://www.worsleyworks.co.uk/index.htm) also do a kitchen car kit in 2mm/ft, and kitchen and restaurant cars in N. This is only an etched brass body and underframe - no roof, buffers, bogies etc. Also no instructions, but the design is the same as Comet Models 4mm kits. Etched Pixels have all the extra bits seperately, except for a roof.

2mm Scale Association (http://2mm.org.uk/) sell a plastic roof, and some underframe fittings.

Bogies are available from Peter's Spares (http://www.petersspares.com/graham-farish-gf48-mk1-coach-bogie-frame-new-n-gauge.ir) - listed as GF48 Mk1 bogie, but actually a pretty reasonable LMS bogie.

Bill Bedford (http://mousa.biz/_downloads/Catalog2.pdf) has various etched sides available. May take 2-3 months for delivery, but they do turn up.

So everything is available, you might need bits from different suppliers depending on exactly what you want to do.

There is always the slim possibility that Farish make the kitchen car in future - they have the 50' underframe from the BG and observation saloon. This year's announcement is early March, but don't get your hopes up.

Thanks Joe and Nabber  :thankyousign:

A great source of information, RE the Bill Bedford site, it looks like I already have 10 out of his 12 etches ( something I bought ages ago ) all I need now is to track down the roofs, bogies and chassis.

Yes, I have given a thank you as some very good info' and tips here. I think there is a fair level of interest in these catering coaches, and particularly the 6 wheel bogied ones. However I have my doubts they will appear in rtr along with further TPO vehicles.

I do wonder if 3D printing will eventually lead to coach kits that are a lot easier to build, and in the vein of dare I say it an Airfix kit?

Almost certainly. Some exist already. Not quite a coach, but I'm just building an LMS CCT (http://www.ultima-models.co.uk/catalogue/lms-wagon.html)
Etched brass sides and ends, several layers to get the relief, stuck with spray adhesive to a 3D-printed core. Fits on a Stove-R chassis. The body took maybe as long as 1/2 hour to assemble! The sausage van is more similar to a coach, and has a 'space-frame' 3D-printed core. Some spray adhesive, a bit of Bostik/UHU for the details, and there you go. Still needs painting though.

They're not perfect yet. The cheaper 3D materials which are good for making the bulk of a body, don't quite have the resolution to make a good roof with sharp edges. Also I'm not sure whether any of the materials are suitable or cost-effective for bogies yet.

I had forgotten those Ultima offerings Nabber.

3D printing will surely become more refined an increasingly find it's way into our modelling, of this I am fairly certain. I only know the bare basics of 3D printing, but if some 6 wheel bogies were possible they would be most welcome I'm sure.

Peedie models are going through some expansion/reorganisation at the moment with quite some emphasis on increasing 3D printing. They seem well placed to move forward in this respect. The next few years could see great strides for us in this material, with possibly many products being made in the U.K.

I forgot to mention that "kitchen car" etc. lettering is available for British Railways liveried ex-LMS coaches.

It is on the Modelmaster sheet for ex-LMS coaches.

Joe

It is also on the fox transfer sheet FRH 2241 along with lounge, sleeping and club car, if it's still available.

What coaches would you use if transfer sides were used?
