I am planning a turntable for my layout, just to turn the locos 180 deg.
I know very little about railway operation, only what I have learned on here so far.
Anyway, I had noted that on many plans, model and prototype, there was a short stub of track off the turntable where there was no exit track (if you see what I mean).
I had a quick search of this forum to see if the topic already existed, and didn't find any.

So, I went on to "our friend" Google, and after a bit of search found the answer.  It is called an overrun, and is there because big locos could not stop with such precision on the turntable, so provided a bit of shuffle room (obvious, really).

And so to the point of this post.  Having got my answer from Google, on reflection I wished I had not.  I should have come on here and asked the question.  That would have resulted in the answer, plus some odd peripheral discussion and the odd anecdote or two. Even a link to previous discussion that I had missed.  But all I got was the answer.

So, Google may be your friend, and a very good one - but can lead you to neglecting other friends.

Tom.

Googling stuff is how I found this website   Moreover even after that, Googling stuff often still brings up this website

It's often an idea to Google first, and then ask a question here if you don't have an answer or you need more details.  This helps to ensure that we don't get the same question asked again and again, which can get a little tedious for the regulars!

I could be wrong here, but I have always been under the impression that it was somewhere to park a locomotive while the turntables was used for other things?  :hmmm:

Hi Bealman.
Not the bit I am talking about - which is only about half a dozen sleepers long.  Not long enuogh to park anything.

Must be a damn short loco then !!!  I think the OP's on about a 6' length of track. not a full lane.

Oh, ok... now I  know what you're talking about. On model turntables like the Fleischmann product with multiple exit points, I've seen the unused ones with stops on them, at exhibitions.

On the prototype, I really am not sure! Hopefully we'll  get the answer soon!

Very well said   :thankyousign: good morning all.
Much better to have a chat about things first, cos I would never have thort to think about nor google the 'overrun' if you had not raised it, if you see what I mean :)
Mind you, all one reads via google may not necessarily be so !!
For example :-
If a big loco cannot be trusted to stop on the table track why are its chances any better to do so on a few feet of overrun ?

Is it not more probable that it is somewhere to put a bufferstop(s) ? ie. the buffer stop(s) would be a proper engineered job on firm ground rather than being perched on the edge of the turntable wall ? Would also be a bit silly to put a bufferstop on the turntable track !!
Or am I missing something ??

Now look what u done Tom
Another thort, as google gets cleverer and cleverer in a few years we wont need fora at all, we will all just silently lurk on google  :laugh3: and the universe will become dark and silent.

The forums will be populated by Google's AI bots, arguing whether the plural of forum is "forums" or "forae".

Meanwhile, Googling "turntable overrun" produces this:

Not much help, sorry.

 :laughabovepost:
and someone somewhere must have photoshopped it with a cheeky Thomas wink ?

Not -ae, we is engineers not latin linguists ;)

Actually, time for an anecdote :-
When I was a very young electrical engineer there was a big debate what the plural of antenna was or should be.
The Institution of Electrical Engineers ( of which I was a fully consenting member ) eventually declared that it shall henceforth be antennas,
leaving the biologists to please themselves over antennae.

Most, if not all, loco sheds were built such that if a loco didn't stop in time, nothing structural got demolished. Looking at the round-house above you'll see that the main structural columns are located each side of each track bay. The loco has just forced its way through a non-load bearing wall - simpler to repair than having half the roof cave in!

Happy modelling.

Tom U I think you got it right the way you went about it.  It's like someone opening the dictionary to find a word, but telephoning the publisher to find out what page it's on instead of looking themself.  You're sitting in front of the biggest massive resource ever at your finger tips, go try find the info.  Don't just post up a question and sit and wait, but post up anything interesting you do find

I can't think of the times I see something I don't get in lots and lots of threads, I don't even have to type in www......etc into my broswer, I just cut and paste the words into the address bar, hit go, read the results then step back to the thread.  So incredibly easy to read up and learn about new things these days, yet I fear we're loosing the ability to look for it ourselves.

I did as you suggest and got 3 hits ! none of them rail related (coffee something or other!) WOT !

Went to DuckDuckGo - 1 hit ! Arrrgh !!
(oh update : 2 ! Duck has found this NGF thread now ! )

Then I removed the quotes ! LOL !
Never before have I seen the quotes make so much difference.
