I was wondering if one were looking to move a non running pannier in real world, but by rail, what on earth sort of wagon would one need to use, so as to clear overhead obstacles etc

I looked at lowmac and conflat, but can't find anything that looks right. Are there any N gauge solutions one can purchase or is this kit/scratch territory only? (not that I could find a kit so far either!)

I am sure someone will correct me but as far as i am aware, steam locos eould gave rods removed then loco hauled now loaded onto wagons as they would not fit the loading gauge.

when modelling i  OO i used to run a train with a rusty hulk, rodless, on route go the scrap yard. I have seen piccies like this but cannot remember where now.

I have often seen steam engines on low loaders travelling from one preserved railway to another. We have the GWR not far from us. One time we saw the Iron Duke being unloaded at Toddington.

No need to 'correct' you Simon as you are spot on.  So far as I am aware only narrow gauge or miniature stock (which would not exceed the loading gauge) was moved on other rail vehicles such as 'well wagons' or low loaders.

The narrow gauge locos on the Vale of Rheidol line were serviced at Swindon into the 1970's and were transported by rail .
