While the misses was resting in bed last night with a bad cold (courtesy of some holidaymaker), and there was nothing on TV, I went through my DVD collection and got out the 8 DVD set "The World's greatest Railway Journeys – Western & Central Europe".

Picked out the DVD featuring Switzerland to watch, which includes on it a trip on the "William Tell Express" which features both a Train & Lake Boat journey through some breathtaking scenery.

Never ever been to Switzerland, but if I did have the chance to go, I think a trip on the "William Tell Express" would be what I would choose.

Anybody on here done that?

Nope, but a trip on the Glacier Express is on our todo list (the Mrs. was most taken by the Kato model of it, which I shall no doubt have to acquire, such is my burden...).

Come to think of it, the only railway trip I've done in Switzerland is Basel - Bern, which was nice but not much dramatic scenery. I also spent some time in Basel once poking around the border crossings - it's sandwiched in a corner between Germany and France, which makes for some interesting cross-border local transport.

Hi
Not sure if I have done that particular trip but I have done a lot of Swiss rail journeys as my wife is Swiss and the family come from just outside Basel

One year my mother in law treated us to a trip from Basel to Lucerne and we than went over the mountains on a rack and pinion train down to I think Interlaken and then over the lake by boat then by train to Bern.  Some spectacular views of the alps for the lake

We had planned to go into the Alps by train last Easter with another day out but the weather was bad in the Alps so we went down to Geneva

The Swiss midlands is less interesting than the alpine region but they have lots of great trains I remember going through a mountain with a car transporter some where in the south

Sadly we have not done the glacier express it is very touristy and expensive

...another interesting journey is the Jungfrau-bahn  (Top of Europe) near Interlaken ..a trip on the railway part of the famous "The Eiger Sanction" movie...above, obviously, the Bernina Express 'til Tirano (Italy)
Cheers.

We have done 2 or 3 trips on the railways of Switzerland, including the Glacier Express, the Jungfrau and the Chocolate train from Vevey. Take a look at the Great Railway Journeys web site.

The years have been good to me, it was the weekends that did the damage.

We've been on the Brienz-Rothorn, very enjoyable.
