Hi I need some advice on where to go to buy a decent set of screwdrivers to work on loco and coaches etc. I did mention this on another thread and was given a link to buy a cheap set. I went ahead and bought them. They arrived today but the Philips screwdrivers are not small enough for some of the screws I need to remove.

I need to remove the scews on my Mausell Coaches to add strip lights and the screws are really tiny.

So PLEASE can you point me in the direction of a set that will fit these. A link or Make would be most useful. :thankyousign:

I got a set of 15 from Maplins. Got all I need and they are all small for precision tasks. The bar code is 5 026686 149241
Mechanical issues can be solved with a hammer and electrical problems can be solved with a screw driver. Beyond that it's verbal abuse which makes trains work!!

I have found them now thanks. Are these small enough for the screws on the dapol Mausell coaches screws.

Expo sell individual sizes of small screwdrivers. I bought their smallest cross head driver and that seems to fit  the smallest screws of everything I have.
Size matters - especially if you don't have a lot of space - and N gauge is the answer!

Not strange to me ... ... Maplins have someone weird putting the terms for stuff into their search engine ... ... Many's the time I've searched for something specific (eg a 25uF electrolytic capacitor) to be told they don't have any - but if you search yourself in the myriad of items you find it - with the exact same terms in the text & often the title too  :veryangry:

Sainsburys do a set of six in a plastic case for £2.99.

I've used them to take the retaining screws off the box mountings for Oxford Diecast vehicles if that is any use.

Mr Sprue

The four main cross head (phillips) sizes you will need will be : No 0000, No 000, No 00 and No 0. So before you buy a set make sure that these sizes are included in it otherwise you will be wasting your money!

Advice I could have done with after buying the second set!  ::)

one set I've found very usefull was one I got from the local 99p shop, metal handle with a selection of flat and crosshead heads in side, which fit into magnetic holder in the end.

at that price I got a couple, and have one with a crosshead and one with a flat in to save keeping changing heads.

cheers

additional info

just checked mine, and there are two different types,

one is 'Rolson' which is a silvery/grey colour, and has 3 x flat head and 4 x crosshead assortment of drivers,

the other I'm not sure of the name but it may be 'Blackspur' which is black, and comes with 3 x crosshead, 3 x flathead and two square head drivers.

probably depends on which they have in stock at the time.

one point to note is that if you put all the drivers in the handle of the black one, they can jam, depending how you load them.
I tend to just keep all the drivers together in a Peco clear wagon box, with the handles just having one driver in each.

hope this helps

Will even do Minitrix coupling rod screws!

Mr chapman

I have some very nice, expensive screwdrivers that will do any job. Except that is fit down a Dapol 14xx chimney. Picked up a set of jewelers screwdrivers in poundland. They fit! Now I use these most of the time
