 Hi all,

I am really, really impressed with Allen at Worsley Works, i started contact with him last sunday, within 6 days I've received my first of his kits.

This looks great, albeit the guards compartment is the wrong size, i don't care, it captures the essence of the 304 perfectly. God I'm impatient, I've bent the cabs already.

Allen supplies the bodysides ready rolled and the cab fronts with the fold lines on the rear. Holes also in the brass for handrails, door knobs and front end cables. I really hope i can do this lot justice - all for £26

Looks very good, Steven.
What about roofs, chassis etc? I'd like to know what you'll be using please :hmmm:

I have 3 Farish MkI's that do need a little trimming, then quite a bit of scratchbuilding to the ends and underframe.
When it's all done, I'll then look at a method of motorising it. Maybe sharing a motor bogie with my 123 for now, unfortunately I'm on a budget (SWMBO  ;)) then I'll look into getting it's own motor chassis!!

Looking forward to seeing how this goes. The 304 doesn't really suit my modelling period, but when I moved to Liverpool in 1982 they were the trains that really said "you aren't in the home counties any more" to me. If the Worsley kit can be made to work, I might well spring for one. Best of luck.

That's strange because where I grew up on the London/Hertfordshire border we had the almost identical Class 305 everywhere! :D

Saying that Sprintex, of the home counties, only Essex and Hertfordshire would've had 305's and 308's running.

I grew up in High Wycombe. It was all class 115s for me, apart from the daily Paddington - Wolverhampton train in the evening, which had a 47 or 50.

I am very interested in this.  Constructional photos would be highly appreciated by me.

I have got the "Amsies" version - as yet unbuilt, but this looks like a superior route to a 304.

Cheers  Jon   :)

I will do, once I've got the coaches stripped of gum. They used to have BHE brass overlays on.

Steven

When you said that the brake compartment was the wrong size, did you mean that it wasn't the version you'd have preferred,  or does it not match either of the brake compartment sizes on the 304s?

Jim

It matches the brake compartment on a 304/2 & 304/3.

The 304/1, which is the sub-class with the smaller windows, has an extra bay of seating (8 seats), and a smaller guards compartment in the MBS.

I do think it's a genuine mistake, i wasn't aware of a difference myself until i received these etches. I won't be asking him to change them, i may drop him a line to make him aware of it though.

Hi Steven

Well worth letting Allen know as he will update his artwork when it is wrong.

Cheers, Mike

I have a 4-SUB from Allen. When I got it i thought OMG its wrong. The number of compartments in one of the trailer seconds seemed wrong. But then i went back to the original build lists and there is a subset of 4-SUBs which were built in 1948  which were absolutely correct for the compartments!

Similarly the 205 Thumper he produces is actually a Berkshire unit (nos 1128-1133) rather than a Hampshire unit (nos 1101-1127) as it has the larger brake compartment and one fewer passenger compartment in the DMBS.

And you know what - they are fantastic etches.

Best
Bob

Ah! I'd forgotten that there were two different sizes of window. I was thinking that the only difference was the size of the brake compartment. Thanks for clearing that up.
