i have searched the on the search option and couldnt find anything, i used to keep marine fish and used activated carbon for filtering the water, however my thoughts are the small size of the carbon would match the size of n gauge as it comes in many sizes, and would work out cheaper than buying from model shops

I was wondering the same thing.  Maybe N Gauge fish in a N Gauge Tank with a N Gauge Filter.

Who knows? But there has been discussion on this forum about N gauge tennis balls getting stuck in N gauge court mesh... eh, Pengi?

  the aquarium hobby is a perfect source for a lot of things on my layout.

filter floss ( cotton ), used for making hedges, trees, and all sorts of bushes

active carbon, indeed looks like coal

zeolite blocks - I use this for stone walls

It this neck of the woods there are several large garden centres that have aquarium/pond departments.

It's a good idea to wander around as quite often there are items, like those already suggested, that can be used. Just keep an eye on the scale of the bits and pieces selected.

i just thought it would have been quite obvious what i was trying to say about the carbon (being coal) and didnt expect the sarky comments, i will keep my thought to my self in the future

carefull been carbon it could short between the live rails and strike an arc - much like a searchlight or cinema arc lamp ...

i was just thinking of using the carbon in a coal yard realy, as my plan is going to be set in the 40s-50s period and only using steam locos, just thinking outloud realy

If I might add to the sarky comments (think of it as banter really), I've been looking into the causes of heat on Poole Farish motors over the past few days and I thought for a minute you wanted to use the carbon as some kind of water filter for a heat exchanger, to be towed behind the loco. Quite where a water filter fits into the logic of a heat exchanger I'm not sure, but it was a nice thought. Now wouldn't that be great, a heat exchanger for n gauge! Guess it would be rather redundant with today's fancy motors.

I'm an aquarist too - just yesterday I was thinking how neat it would be to have an aquarium with a cylindrical tunnel all the way through it, with a line passing through. That way you could watch your fish and the trains passing through - wonder what the fish would make of a class 47 passing through with a rake if 10mk I's? Probably try and eat it!

Anyway, sorry for the thread creep, just thought I'd share my thoughts ... and no, I (honestly) had no idea we were talking about coal until you mentioned it.

Will rummage around in the cupboard and see if I've got any of that carbon - I do remember having some.
