Is the J39 tender driven and how good a runner is it, it does seem cheap and is that for a reason.

cheers.

It is tender driven, same tender drive as the B1.

I have no less than five Farish J39s, they all run superbly just as the B1s do in my experience.

The price is only slightly cheaper than that being asked by Hattons (£72) and a number of other "box Shifters" so that doesn't look any particular reason to have suspicions.

I finally gave in and got the weathered version, Geoff.
Superb looker and runner

Plainline.

I have a Union Mills J39. It is well made, has good haulage capabilities and slightly cheaper than the Farish one.

Mine has hauled 5.5m of wagons around my layout with 12" curves without a slip. I suspect it would pull a lot more but I ran out of track space.

Superb model in every way!

Geoff

Yep looks like I will be getting one after the weekend thanks for everyones input.

But for the sake of balance, the UM loco is nowhere near as well detailed and is not DCC ready.

In fact in my humble opinion (Having owned both) the only area where the UM loco may potentially trump the Farish one is in haulage, and in that area it is pretty subjective as both will pull more than the prototype loco.
