There is also Malware that causes this exact issue...

Download the free software called MALWAREBYTES ANTI MALWARE
Install and run in deep scan mode it can run for a few hours and whilst it is running your pc will be unresponsive.... It will then list any strange things it finds and you can fix/quarantine as necessary.

Thanks Paul but I have already done that and it found 107 items, mainly from a firewall break a few weeks ago for an annoying piece of software called Bubble Dock which popped up everywhere!

Regards, Peter.

Does your dvd drive take + or - dvds, or does it do both?

cheers John.

I assume you mean CD's or DVD's, yes it coped happily with both.

No Peter I don't mean that.

You can get DVDs that are "Plus" and DVDs that are "Minus" and some drives will only handle the one type.

If you are still using the same batch of DVDs that you were successful with, then that rules out the plus/ minus argument.  However if you have bought a new pack of DVDs then you may inadvertently bought the wrong type.

Check the box the DVDs came in, it will be marked either DVD+R or DVD-R.

cheers John.

Thankyou John but it appears we are all getting off track!

I am merely trying to burn a CD with some MP3 files of some music I downloaded from 7 Digital as a gift for my daughter.

My CD/DCVD player does not exist any more as regards, burning or playing!

I think like another poster that I will either have to renew the player/recorder and/or check the wiring!

Warmest regards, Peter.

Many thanks for all the suggestions, possible software and ebverything else.

I have removed the disc drive from the server and it looks as if something has burnt out!  There is some Black dust between some contacts that is very similar to brake dust in colour and texture!

I will now have to start saving for a new drive!!!

Regards Peter.

Is your drive IDE or SATA Peter? I may have a spare one you can have. I need to check depending on the type.
The years have been good to me, it was the weekends that did the damage.

If I weren't across the pond, I'd offer you one, too, Peter. Postage would make it a costly offer.

They are not very dear if you buy from the correct place. First is the drive Sata or IDE, it's easy to check if the drive has a wide ribbon cable its IDE, a narrow cable SATA. The SATA drives are dirt cheap here is a link, less than £12 plus postage.IDE drives are getting on a bit like me and are harder to find now.

My sincere thanks to everyone for their offers of help and in some instances parts!

The PC is owned by my stepson and he has instructed me that he will sort out any problems at his next visit, so patience, I am knocking on your door!

Warmest regards, Peter.

Peter, the one bit of information that you have not supplied is what  was the music that you were copying ?

If it was something worthwhile like 'Dire Straights', 'Enya', 'Moody Blues' or even 'Abba' then I could offer a lot of sympathy. On the other hand if it was Rap or whatever, then perhaps the hardware gave up in disgust ?

Just out of interest it was a compilation of "Renaissance music", my eldest daughter is being ordained as a priest soon and it was a gift for her.

Regards, Peter.

PS the last music I burned with this system was Electronica by "Munich Syndrome"!!!
