Forgive a newbie if this subject has already been done to death, but is there anywhere I can get hold of transfers/decals for a whole alphabet of lettering for locos suitable for early 1940's British period? I'm making a pannier tank for an imaginary railway (the PCR) and I want to decorate my engine accordingly!

I've made my own decals with waterslide paper in the past for balsa plane kits, but light colours don't reproduce well on dark backgrounds.

Any advice gratefully received!

For generic alphabets and fonts your local art shop probably has a whole pile of letraset and similar. They often match reasonably well with railway alphabets or plausible ones. I use some of these sheets for Barry Railway stock but I keep running out of 'R's 8)

Good question, Ozzy. I've been looking around for decent general transfers for a while now. The local art shop could well be worth trying for the plain white lettering I need for S&DJR wagons, especially if they include an old-fashioned 'No.' transfer with the dot presented as a line under the raised 'o'.

This pic gives an example, with the numbering being the height of one plank - perfect (or at least it would be if it was in the right gauge).

Fox do alphabets/numbers in various colours and three different fonts, right down to 1mm:-

Thanks Neil, but as far as I can see a plain white sheet of transfers would only be able to label three wagons in this particular instance. That's a lot of money to pay for just three sets of labels.

Pete; you would also need a sheet in black, applied under the white to create the shading.

Might be worth contacting someone like Chris Moxham, who supplies custom-made transfers:-

Thanks for the link, Neil. I've had a ticket with Railtec Models for three months for S&DJR locomotive transfers, but as I haven't paid anything, and they seem fairly laid-back about the whole thing, perhaps its time to go elsewhere. I can't be the only person ever to have requested S&D transfers in 2mm.

By the way, late S&D wagons didn't have shading to their lettering, just the plain white letters, so that makes that side of things more simple, at least!

Yep, and I have their big sheets for LMS and SR wagon labelling. The quality is not quite as good as Fox Transfers, but they're certainly suitable for wagons, especially when you can blend them in with a bit of heavy weathering. No pre-Grouping companies covered, though.

After trawling the internet for what seems like months without success, I'm beginning to think I'm asking for the impossible. Does anyone know where I could source some 2mm Great Central Railway lettering, crests and lining?

I found the perfect set advertised on the 2mm Assn. site but despite several emails I never got a reply >:(

I'd love to know too. Think I'm going to have to make my own
