Well I have been working hard on my 6' x 3' layout dropping wires on every rail and installing occupancy detection, then the wife tells me that I can have the small bedroom when my lad moves out in the next 2 months  :-X, only if she told me that sooner.

And the planning begins, again.

Better get that in writing, Geoff.

Otherwise check for fever, etc. Most unusual for the domestic authorities to give away space like that... :)

Beware  lads have a habit of returning for the odd night or two.
A lock on the door might make him thinking about finding an alternative temporary sleeping place. ;)

I put a lock on the door when they were little, and he has been asking for the key and told him it was lost, but its in the safe away from prying eyes.

Are you sure she didn't say "You can have the smallest room"?
If so, you may need a lifting flap for the khazi

Do nothing for three or four, maybe five months. Use the time to get the basic wood, track, essential scenery etc. and spend a month erecting the basic layout. If in doubt.  make sure a mattress can fit underneath (but one supplied by the returning prodigal son).

Proceed to plan and build the layout you never thought was possible in full knowledge and cooperation with SWM(S)BO. (M=must; S=should - you know her, choose yourself !)

You can always go back to the existing if this fails !!!!!!

I was a little bit more sneeky....suggested to the missus I wanted to return to n gauge modelling ....she said why not clear a "small" space in our double garage....just dissapeared in there for a few days and found the wood fairies had built a 16 foot by 10 foot set of baseboards with a nice 9 foot by 4 foot central well...they even had fitted an old off cut carpet piece in the well !!!...she now never sets foot in the garage!!

My eldest son finishes school this year.

There is an angel on my left should telling me that he stay at home for his further education, because I'll miss him if he goes away, and also it will save us money.

I'll leave you to guess what the devil on my right shoulder is saying (my son has his own bedroom).

Best regards,

Joe
