What speed to I run it in at! 
Normally it's easy to work out what constitutes sort of middling speed....

The maximum on the controller is the maximum speed for the loco.

I usually start at a quarter and then half speed for about 20 minutes each speed and in each direction.

I think the thread title is a bit alarmist for such a question
Personally I run locos for 15 mins in each direction at medium speed, turn the loco round and repeat as this method runs it in all possible directions.
