Hi,

Has anybody seen the train crash at Chester today. It was the 10.10 from London Euston it completely failed to stop. A man of 64 taken to hospital. It over ran into the buffers before hitting a glass wall.

I wonder what happened to all the safety systems installed to prevent this sort of thing. The RAIB report will make interesting reading.

All the safety systems? There's only TPWS. The first question will surely be is it installed at Chester? If the answer is no, then it's down to the Mk1 human being.

The real safety system installed for this *is* the buffers and various shock absorbing areas on the nose, plus the rules about what is permitted behind the buffer stop. The safety system worked quite well by the look of it.

According to a passenger who was onboard at the time of impact about 1/2 a MPH.
The train was more or less stationary. Stationary when it hit the buffer.

 Half a mile an hour? Ok then, that's news, I suppose. Still, I'm in the same age bracket as the injured person, and I only have to tickle meself and I start bleedin' so I can sympathise.

You can have as many safety systems as you like. When I back me car out of me driveway in a morning, I'm fair game for an accident. Especially here in NSW, don't any of you worry about that. (One of a once famous Australian state Premier's sayings - not the first bit, just the "don't you worry about that" bit). 

Anyway, good that there were no deaths or serious injuries.

A TPWS train stop should be fitted to this platform at Chester. It a requirment that a TPWS Train Stop is fitted to all dead end platforms used by passenger trains, basically to prevent buffer stop collisions.

However if the train passed the train stop at a low enough speed that it did not operate the I agree human factors come into consideration.
