If you are not my friend, don't bother!

All day today my wife and I have experienced problems with our internet modem.

It is only now this evening that it has finally decided to work, I have no idea how long it will continue!!

If I do not make any contact for a week or so it is because we are saving for a new modem!!

I know you will all understand?

Regards, Peter.

PS I will delete my classifieds because I cannot be sure that I will have any idea when I could continue!

Hi Peter, sorry to hear you're having problems, are you certain it's the modem and not the internet service provider that's messing you about? Many people I know have a lot of hassle with some companies (Sk* & Ta*k Ta*k instantly spring to mind! :veryangry:) Just want you to be sure before wasting hard earned modelling money if you don't need to !

If it is the modem, your internet provider may just send you another one without any charge if you call them and tell them there's a problem.

Agree with Trev on this one Peter, try contacting your provider for a replacement, they may add the cost of it to your bill over the period of a few months

It could also be a problem with the telephone line, however I do strongly agree with Trev and Lawrence, contact your ISP and see what they suggest before laying out any cash  ;)

cheers John.

Before BT Infinity arrived, we had a Virgin-supplied Netgear modem. There were times I would get home from work and the internet connection wouldn't be working and after several 'reactivations' by Virgin (organised over the phone) we asked if the modem was the faulty thing. We asked for a new modem and mrs d-a-n insisted they foot the bill. Virgin insisted we buy a new one. We sacked them off and went to BT, who welcomed our new business, Virgin asked us to give them one last chance and offered a new modem... Try the 'I'm leaving you' card with your provider if they don't want to give you one for free - do not feel any guilt, they are a faceless corporation.

I must agree with the others chase your ISP first before parting with any money.

But I know just how you feel Peter, until I switched to BT infinity we never knew whether the system was going to be up or down.

Thankyou, Infinity is not coming our way until possibly 2016!

Thanks for the update.

Peter.

I guess you have tried all the obvious things like making sure that there are no loose connections.
Also worth trying the old chestnut - switch off the modem and leave it a couple of mins before restarting.
I'm sure I'll get used to cream first soon.

I did all those things and before I actually threw it across the room I gave it an hour totally uncoupled and this is why I am posting like mad this evening before I switch everything off!!!

Hope you get it sorted very soon, Peter.
Oh - and please don't hurl it around as, knowing your luck, pandemonium could ensue

I assume you checked they were not carrying out any repairs or testing in your area today Peter? You can also ask them to run remote checks or your line and they can interrogate your modem or talk you through set up changes via your own PC.  Also do you have a filter in the line as they can become faulty.
Not teaching you to suck eggs, you thinking out loud so to speak.

Not sure of exactly what setup you have but if you have a modem and a wireless router / hub make sure you have powered off and reset both....I have that occur from time to time and a reset seems to straighten things out......

:sorrysign:
If you like it run it......

My old BT router also had a pin hole in the side that could be reset with a cocktail stick.
I think it restores the factory settings :dunce:

My Virgin cable Modem failed a few weeks back, I spen tabout half an hour on the phone (free) to a bloke in the sub continent, who did quite a few checks then agreed with me that it was the modem, booked an engineer call and one new modem fitted free speed back up to 20M again.
Cheers MIKE
