Considering restarting my rail project, I understand the Farish 91 is an old model with flaws but it would seem that it's being reduced to clear in a fair few shops and the mk4 coaches also are going out of stock. As the 91 is one of my favourite locos is it likely there'll be a replacement coming out or should I grab it now before it goes? Don't really mind the GNER livery tbf, as I see there's plenty of scope for changing that.

Not my era, however if you see something that you think is a bargain grab it. It could be years before another comes along.

Some days its just not worth gnawing through the straps.

I'd grab one while they are cheap. Although Poole-era models, the new chassis on the 91 is a big improvement and the finish on the GNER Mk4s probably one of Bachmann's best - they even have destination labels.

The 91 can scrub up even better with a little work, such as moving the front bufferbeam and skirt to the body and fit a Dapol high-speed pantograph. Taylor Precision Models produces a set of etches to correctly model the 91 in its current 91/1 guise with the extra side vents. BHE had some on sale at the NGF bash last weekend.

If you fancy changing the livery to Intercity or East Coast, Electra (OK, me...) does a range of overlays.

My feeling is you should buy now.  If you're happy with the level of detail on the models and the price then act before someone else snaps them up.  By the sounds of it you can improve the looks if you wish.

The perceived wisdom from the model makers is that electric locos don't sell well/quickly (and if there are new old-stock 91s on the shelves it lends weight to that point of view).  Also, the 91 isn't new enough to be the latest 'must have', probably not quite old enough to evoke nostalgia (although it can't be far off) and maybe not quite as iconic as the HST which it replaced.  So I don't think either of the big brands will be hurrying to produce a re-tooled 91 (nor Farish issuing another run with the existing tooling).

James,

If you're interested I have one for sale, it's the older Poole version, but runs very well. It's in Intercity livery and I have 7 MK4 coaches to go with it.

I want £75 + £5 delivery, if you're interested PM me.

Neal.
