Now my lovely mother has recently come into some money and she says she will spend around £100 for my layout, whether it be a loco or rolling stock or whatever...

But i dont know what to get!

If its a loco, it has to be dcc, and a steamer with couplers at both ends...

Rolling stock, i have no idea! Definatly thing coaches in this sector but which ones?

I have:-
7 mk1s in b&c
7 teaks
9 gresleys in b&c
5 maroon collets
3 mk1s in maroon
5 mk1 pullmans
3 mk1s in chc/cream (part of the dining train)

Any help?

I wouldnt mind a dapol 9f with double chimney but i cant find any :/

Do you have to decide now?

Could the money not be sitting waiting on that bargain that comes along, then you would have the cash to immediately go for it?

I've got both the single and double chimney 9Fs, both weathered versions, and they're lovely. But... they're delicate and easily damaged. I only run them on special occasions, and one of them needs a repair (the second time since I've owned it). They don't always run perfectly through my Kato points (the pony truck spring kit helps, but doesn't cure this) and they do sometimes slip and struggle pulling long trains round sharp bends and up slopes. So far as hauling like a 9F, they're nowhere near the real thing!

So far as steam engines go, my favourite for simply running around the track is a Union Mills 'Adams 0395' in Southern Railway black. Union Mills do a bunch of other designs, and provided you don't model the GWR/Western Region area, you're bound to find something that fits your plan. They're rugged engines, and though the detailing is basic, the upside is there's little/nothing to snap off if you sneeze. Even the most expensive Union Mills loco is around the £70 mark.

Because they're heavy (made from solid metal, not plastic) and have a big motor (by n-scale standards) these locomotives will pull anything, and their design is simple enough that they handle iffy point-work without fuss.

They aren't models for purists who want perfect scale copies of something; but if you want a rugged, durable locomotive that will run and run and run, they're ideal.,

If you want DCC fitted you are limited to the Peco Collett 22xx and that is generally outside the range of your wallet.
Failing that you will have to buy what you want and factor in the cost of fitting a chip or paying someone to do so. In that scenario you can find a deal at one of the major box shifters and then see whether the conversion to DCC still falls within your £100 limit
