Could you tell me which British electric locomotive  should be chosen as first from Graham Farish for British Rail beginner class 87 or 90?

I was also going to recommend the Dapol 86 - far more detailed than the Farish 87, 90 or 91 and it comes with working lights and is DCC ready.

In a show-down between the Farish 87 or 90, I'd actually go for the 87, as the 90 has the horrible bufferbeam mounded to the bogie.

The Dapol 86 is probably the best (sanely priced) electric model by a large margin and DCC ready with lights etc.

The 87 is ok, although the TPM replacement body is better but a fair bit of work.

The 90 and 91 are like the Farish 87 products of their time - no DCC, no lights, less detailed.

In part it also depends on use and period.

I really like the Farish class 90 model (have the Virgin liveried one) but would also like to get the Dapol NSE liveried 86. I had the Farish class 91 and didn't like the model at all, but it all depends what era and region you're modelling as to what you buy.

Run all three on my layout, and Dapol Class 86 by far the best product, by way of looks, finish and performance. Can also pick some up now at lower costs too!

I have all 3 including 3 class 90's, Virgin, EWS and Freightliner. I would be in the market for a Scotrail liveried one as well.

Whatt i would REALLY like is an affordable class 92 to haul my Dapol ferrywaggons.

Still waiting for one at sub £70, the Farish 90 I have needs some TLC.

Never seen that livery.....

Then again, I've not worked up in Glasgow for 6 months plus.

Thanks a lot for this information, but I have a new question.Recently I saw a film on Youtube  - on a  n gauge layout class 86 in Frightliner-Look pushed a Virgin Express train. Was it a mistake? Can we see such a duty in reality?

i've not seen a freightliner 86 pushing or pulling virgin trains coaches before but i dare say it may have happened at one time or another

as for the best model, the class 86 from dapol wins.

what coaches and wagons do you have?  maybe this can help you decide which loco matches them best.

Hi

You would have found at one point, before all the extended pendolinos entering service, a regular service with, initially an EWS class 90, and latterly a Freightliner class 90 hauling the 'pretendolino' mk 3 set. You can still see the pretendolino MK 3 in use, mainly for charters, usually hauled by a Freightliner 90, however, 50044 did also haul the pretendolino mk 3 set on a special, before it's engine gave up the ghost !!

Cheers

Tony
