Hi,
I've just bought 3 new GF Stanier coaches and overall I'm very pleased with them. Great detail, good way the couplings are sprung and allow for much closer coupling etc but.....

Does anyone know if it's possible to get at the insides to put passengers in?

Thank you

(GF product number 374-835A)

Yes, but it is a bit more difficult that the old style farish coaches...

First you need to undo any water tank pipes that run from the roof down the ends. usualy these are just a push fit into a hole in the end  but I've had a couple that were glued. The roof should then come off by gently prising it off with a  small flat screwdriver or similar. IIRC on the staniers there are two clips each side but the exact positioning varies wth the coach type.

The latest mk 1s are vey similar, and looking at the unpainted samples suspect the Bullieds will be too...

Cheers Paul,

I'm just scared of damaging the fine fittings.

I've done quite a few Mk Is, but admittedly not a Stanier as yet. Unless you are adding lighting that has to go into the space between the top of the body shell and the roof, you shouldn't need to take the roof off at all as you can just carefully prise the body+roof off the chassis to gain access to the seating. The seating moulding can also be removed from the chassis if necessary.

I do add lighting, so I take the roof off. I use a wide square-ended bladed craft knife which I rounded the edges of that I use to prise the pipework off the body ends (the ends of the pipes that go into the roof are usually glued in so best left alone if possible). The ends are about 1.5mm long and can take some effort to get out, so I suspect they be bent over inside during assembly. Therefore, it may be necessary to cut them down a bit if they foul on the insides when re-inserting them.

Having populated most of my Staniers, i can confirm that the way mentioned above works :)

Ollie, I think there's another thread on this somewhere else, but I'd be intrigued to know where you get your figures from. I'm doing 1950s and find most of the figures sold on on e-bay are too garish and not particularly good quality, but the better quality ones from railway model dealers are either very expensive or look too Germanic (lederhosen and funny hats, etc.). Either way I end up re-painting them. Do you have a better source? :hmmm:

I buy the garish ones off ebay. I bought 1100 figures for around £30.00

I'll admit they are not the best quality (and very bright!) but as these are purely for populating coaches i wasn't fussed about them looking amazing. All of my figure on the layout itself are wither Farish or Noch.
