i sprayed a wagon i had weathered using carr's powders with matt varnish, and it messed up the 'redland' logos on the side.

does it matter if you don't use matt varnish to fix the powders in place?

is there an alternative to matt varnish that wont mess up the decals?

Sounds like you thinned it down too much with thinners?

I used an aerosol can of artist's fixer on mine, didn't affect the finish. A couple of very light coats was enough

Some varnishes affect the backing on some transfers. Trouble is sometimes its ok and others they break up. I think the tolerances are just too tight because of the efforts to reduce the effects of the backing shadow.
What varnish did you use?

I've used vallejo matt varnish over my transfers on my class 422 and had good results,

yeh the redland writing has just broken up and some writing slipped down...

is it absolutely necessary to fix the weathering powders?

i used some humbrol matt varnish spray...

Not used weathering powders myself but I'd have thought it'd be much the same as the pastels I've been using, in that if you don't fix them with something they'll just rub off again with handling

I used hairspray on some of mine and it worked fine. They still look weathered after 8 years!
