will double heading damage the motors?

will double heading damage the motors?  the locos do not move at quite the same speed (they are both new class 20s), so will this burn out the motors as one will be pushing or pulling the other slightly?

hi tim,
should not but you can adjust cv's to get them to go at the same speed i think. not sure what cv number it is but im sure i have read it on here

yes i had heard about adjusting cvs but never done that. i need to read up on all that technical stuff!

anyway i just wanted to check before i paired up the 20s!!! i have 20192 and 20063 now, both in blue.

now to unpack 18 HEA hoppers for them to pull round the track!!!

i may have to re-create some leicester - skegness trains as well...

Trouble is, that would make a train half as long as my layout!!

If the motors are vastly different it may put additional strain on both the motor and the gear train but I wouldn't worry about a small difference in running speed...

I am the same as Steve 44 and have run double headers for years with no trouble.

I have a rake of 24 PGA hoppers, and the first time I saw them all behind my Class 31 winding their way through the curves it was definitely a 'WOW' moment  :thumbsup:

As for the double-heading I would think it might only be an issue if you intend to leave it continuously running for a long time.

my tip is to put the slightly faster one on the front, less chance of a derailment/unexpected uncoupling as all the couplers will be pulled tight.

I have found that you can help the slow one 'catch up' a bit if you give it a few more hours running in on it's own.

The fun really starts when you have a pusher at the rear !  ;D
If it's got rails... you have my full, undivided attention - Steam, diesel and electric, 'tis all good !

they are not that different in speed, but i think that tip about the faster one on front is good idea!  i will also run the slower one in a bit more, i'll find some solo work for it to do!

i have run the class 20s in a pair with 9 mk1s tonight (6 blue/grey, 1 regional railways, 2 intercity) as a holiday special.

about 20 HEAs is the most I can have because of the length of the loops in the fiddle yard.  i am collecting HAAs now as well but only have 2 so far! i have the pair of 20s, and also two 58s and a 56, so coal is going to be the main freight traffic on my layout.

i have six loops and two very long sidings, but the fiddle yard is never big enough because i keep buying more rolling stock. i must stop it!
