I've been thinking of useing some of these to kitbash into a larger TMD building, and I wondered if anyone who's got one of these could answer the following silly questions :

1. is there any form of base or floor in the kit ?

2. do both ends have the same format, ie two sets of doors, or is one end solid.

3. is there any form of splice plate for joining them end to end, or do you just use an end piece and mod it.

4. are the roofs one piece mouldings, or are the 'northern lights' pieces seperate to add to a roof panel.

I'm thinking of using strip to build inside framing and supports, and considering plain roofs, but some idea of what is in the box would help with rough planning.

thanks in advance for any help

Hi Alan,I have three of these engine sheds for my layout, all are to be used together as one largish diesel maintenance facility.
They do not come with any form of base so you'll have to sort rhat out for yourself, although Peco do do a pit section complete with track for the insides.
They are a modular design so the com with doors to be fitted at both ends. These are of the hinged variety but I only use the doors at the entrance and buffer ends. One shed is double length,ie,two sheds end to end and the other one is right beside it,but the side entrance doors are made to line up so to create an entrance from one to another.
I haven't used the doors in between the sheds but have cut out the ctentre posts to create an un obstructed path from one shed building to the next. These are truly modular buildings so you can use as many end to end as you like and potentially can be used to house two full hst rakes, although at around a tenner each, this would end up being quite dear.
The roofs are in two pieces for each building and can't really be used without the rooflights fitted as the roof panels have cutouts for the rooflights to sit on,although now I think of it,flush glazing may be used but is not supplied in the box.
As an aside, adding plastruct to the inside would add detail but as the buildings are that small,I doubt that adding such detaul would make any visual difference. It would be far better to add body jacks, tool chests, workers and other railrelated detritus near the doors to add to the scene, also lighting them is a good idea as well.
I am going to use Dapol light bars to light my sheds up due to them being too bright for the coach interiors,in my opinion.
Hope this answers your questions.

Hi Pete,

many thanks for that. answers just about all my questions  :beers:

luckily I'm looking to place mine along the back of the baseboard, so should be able to make a back wall from ply or mdf, and use all the kit parts for the ends and front walls.

I'm thinking of one section at the back 6 wall units long, twin track for HSTs, then one wall unit in from each end coming out 2 'end units', ie four tracks, for the centre 4 'wall units' length, if that makes sense.

I was also thinking of replacing the opening doors with roller shutters, don't know if that will work with the supplied doors cut down till I see them.

if I understand you right, the roofs are a front and a back, from the ridge to the eaves, with the lights units glueing over the cutouts.
this might let me cover the roof panels with corrugated material, with slots cut for clear glazing.

looks like an idea for me to reproduce some 'ends' in plastic card too for the supports at the joins of the units, with the inside cut back to leave just supports either side against the walls, and in the middle between the tracks.

I've ordered some of the inspection pits so each road will have pits at either end visible through the doors, and as you suggested jacks etc around.

I will probably use plastic card for the slab inside the shed, and between the rails where the pits are not there, and I'll probably also have a slab outside the shorter part of the shed to the end of the longer rear section.

hopefully the sheds and pits will arrive on my days off this week, and SWMBO willing, I'll be able to get something worked out.

I was going to seek guidance from Chris, of OW TMD fame, re lighting the inside of the shed, IIRC he used small LEDs.

once again, many thanks for your help,

alan

I'd seen that, which made me wonder if they did a join / slice piece in the kit, rather than modding an end piece.

many thanks anyway, mine should be here tomorrow then I can start to play carry out a scientific test  :smiley-laughing:
