Title: Adding photographs to a post
Post by: Madann01 on December 22, 2018, 07:53:44 AM
Spent most of the night trying to attach or display photo's to a post  Firstly I have managed to upload the pictures to 'My Gallery' but although going through pressing what I think are the correct buttons on the post page, nothing appears?
Could someone please tell me the best way of doing this? Have been searching through the forum for answers but keep going around in circles, My photo's are just simple files taken on a tablet computer and stored on my PC, :confused2:
. Also have lost many of half written posts by having to leave the page to look elsewhere on the forum, is it possible to save the post and return to it later?

I'm having trouble posting photos too.

There is still ongoing work going on. Hopefully all will be well soon.

There is a new version of gallery currently being installed.
I think we have to wait until Tank tells is itís all working properly.

Hi, am aware that there are a few issues kicking around with the gallery but am I getting the mechanics right ? I'm pressing the add image to post button and get a pop up screen with choices of where to upload  picture to in the gallery? How do I reference the picture to be used? Can I add photos  directly without going via the gallery? Can I try cut and paste?

Must be something simple I am doing wrong, but what are the steps required to get a photo on to a post? What should I be seeing? I have read through many posts about resizing photos and other technical things with links involved, far too complicated for little old me, Have only just got to grips with using the computer,
Your guidance would be very much appreciated,  :help:

At the moment, I can't help, because the procedure I have used for seven years isn't working.

Some members are using Flickr, dropbox and similar stuff with success.

A waiting game!  :beers:

Iím in the same boat as Bealman.
Iíve just been playing around and find that Flickr works just fine and itís feee.
Iíll post a pic on my Port Perran/Trepol Bay thread in a mo to check it works.
Iím using an ipad but I guess the sequence of events will be roughly the same on a phone or PC.

The system is working perfectly well and as it should if you don't try and load a photo that is too big.

Its a small part of Bob Tidbury's layout and it is quite a spectacle.

 :helpneededsign:
If you're going to write a long post, write it in Notepad first then copy/paste into the page text box.

If you need to check something on the forum (or elsewhere) while writing a post directly into the page, open another browser tab and use that to find what you're looking for.

PS, no problem at all with "Add image to post", it's been working fine yesterday and today

Easy, just open a second tab then open a new copy of the forum (or any other site) on that one and do your searches, copy anything you need on that then go back to the first tab (which still has your part completed post) to continue that post and paste anything you copied.

(Some forums have an auto save, so you can restore the auto saved work if you need to chack on something else, don't think NGF has that though (yet?))

The new version of SMF Forum is rumoured to have this feature built it, however, I'll look into a modication to see if we can incorporate it into the current version.  Good idea though.

Too large maybe (either file size or pixel dimensions)? I think that's been reported by others as a reason for this failure .  What file size/dimensions are you trying to upload?

On the NGF forum.  I have no control of the SMF forum!  :)

Just start creating a post and you'll see "Save as Draft" next to "Post" and "Preview".

I used to be able to add pictures from my phone, but ever since Christmas all I get is

Incorrect file type

Pictures are jpg, whatever that is and have absolutely no idea how anything gets changed to a different format. I assumed it was because of the galley upgrade over new year but clearly not

Do we know the limit size of a pic, after I'd shrunk it to just the coupling it was 45kB.

I guess that's quite small  :confused2:

I resize to 1920 to 1080 pixels  which is more than adequate for a website.
Title: Re: Adding photographs to a post
Post by: dannyboy on January 30, 2019, 07:07:33 PM
I usually shrink to 2500 pixels, in 'Paint', (the other measurement is automatic), and it quite often works. However, looking at the 'Properties' of a picture, it seems to be that anything less than 2MB will be accepted by the forum.

Appear to be having a similar challenge but before I move on can I check.  I can put the images into a post by linking to uploaded images in my library so the pictures are on the board.  I can preview the post and see the pictures but when I come to post I get a File Format error.  Looking at my posting template it says the only allowed formats for pictures are PDF's.   Is this a known problem or the same as others ?   Thanks

@Gavin (https://www.ngaugeforum.co.uk/SMFN/index.php?action=profile;u=1269)

quite a few people, especially newbies it seems,  get caught out with the "PDF only" limitation which applies to the "attachments and other options"  link below the editor text box.

I always use the "add image to post and upload to gallery" link which is right above the text box where I'm typing this reply.  No problem uploading jpg images etc. using that option.

Works for me on my Windows 10 laptop and Chrome browser.  It's a Flash powered app though, so you may need to enable it in the browser.  I get the impression Flash is falling out of favour these days.

Itís a strange issue, you can upload jpg imageís to the gallery, link them from a forum post and see them in the preview but as soon as you post you get a file format error.  The error says its not allowing PDF files but it looks like its the file size thatís the issue.  Looks like I need to remove all my files from the gallery, resize and then reload.  Once done I can post directly from the gallery I hope.

This is a test, not my picture, but good enough to test.
If it works then there is no need to post into a gallery unless you wish to. Use the top section of the upload page and it goes straight into the post.

Hi Guys
HELP!!!! :helpneededsign:
I have uploaded a number of photos to the gallery (I think they went ok)
1st question
Where do I find my gallery?
2nd question
How do I add them inline to a post?
Is it easier just to add them as attachments or to just give a link to them for something like Dropbox ?
I just wrote an extensive reply to a post and tried to add some photos.
And lost the lot when I tried to get back to it after uploading the photos
Regards Chris

Whenever I want to add a photo' I open a separate window and open another forum page, so I have two running and work in the second one. The gallery can be found in the line of links just underneath the adverts. Click on gallery and another line of links will appear. Click on 'My Gallery' or 'My Images' and you should see your pictures. I add a picture to a post by clicking on the picture and it will open. Underneath the picture, there is a box called BB Code. Copy that whole line of text in the box and paste into your post.

Dunno if I'm doing it the right, or best, way but I just click on the link above the text entry box "Add image to post and upload to gallery", enter an image title, select "Random Photos" from the Category dropdown list and select my image to upload using the "Browse" button before hitting the "Add Picture" button. The image then gets uploaded and the code inserted in my post. I then repeat that for any other images.

As I say, I don't know if it's the right or best way but it seems to work for me.

Yes I've typically done exactly the same in the past, however if I think the photo is worth keeping in my gallery  (in case need to include it again) then I use the "User Gallery" on the lower half of that pop-up window instead of "Add Picture".

Once it's in your gallery you can click on the photo and  copy the "BB Code" link, then paste that link into another post you're writing.  As @dannyboy (https://www.ngaugeforum.co.uk/SMFN/index.php?action=profile;u=4209) says if you've already started writing your post then open a 2nd browser tab to the forum and navigate through "Gallery" to "My Images" to get to the photo and the BB code link.  "My Images" also includes stuff you added to previous posts but not your gallery.

I guess I ought to investigate galleries some time - but for now since all my photos are in one thread, that serves as a gallery in itself.

Gallery/upload multiple photos allows drag/drop or access to your photos directory - its much easier than using the dialogue at the bottom of the page

It should be renamed upload single/multiple photos?

Everytime I try to add pictures this tells me an error has occured. Why does everything have to be so  :censored: complicated.

Take a picture on my phone.....add picture.

No. That's not allowed to happen because it's the wrong file type. Well if someone can tell Samsung they need to save their pictures under a file name that they don't we might get somewhere.

So there we go, I'll just not add pictures. No one is allowed to see what we've got done, and it saves me a hell of alot of anger.

@exmouthcraig (https://www.ngaugeforum.co.uk/SMFN/index.php?action=profile;u=5099) I too have a Samsung and, whilst the camera is far superior to anything apple has produced, they do create extremely large JPGs, and there is a maximum file size the forum will let you upload. I have given up editing photos and videos and created a free flickr account and just create an album and provide a link, the other option is to reduce the size (resolution) of the image you are taking in your phone camera settings, or edit it down and re-save it so it is less than the permitted 2mB upload.
Title: Re: Adding photographs to a post

My digital camera (and many more I believe) take pics anything between 2.5MB and almost 4MB.
The easiest way I've found to resize them is to right click on the pic then 'Open with Paint'.
Within Paint look for 'Resize' and click on the pixels part. Mine are usually at 4000 so I reduce that figure to 2500 and then just press 'Enter'.
Go to 'File' then 'Save' and your pic should now be under 2MB.
Hope this helps someone

I use an online optimizer.

But, at the risk of yet again getting up the noses of the very team I am a member of, I shouldn't bloody well have to do that!

Twelve months ago, I could snap a picture on this very same phone, and load it onto the forum a few minutes later from the same phone.

Can't do it now.

Whatever happened is a backward step that needs fixing, ASAP.

Screenshot and resize
Add photo to My Gallery section rather then the top panel and somehow it worked 🤔
Title: Re: Adding photographs to a post
Post by: Bealman on August 07, 2019, 12:17:16 PM
It will, but it's the stuffing around.

I've been a forum member for a while now, and I could always upload any picture I took, straight off my phone within seconds of taking it.

And when the change was made from albums to galleries,  heaps of my uploaded photos disappeared from the forum.

Whatever happened was a backward step, and needs fixing.

Posting photos easily is not possible, and it's letting this excellent forum down.

I personally don't find uploading photos to be too much of a problem. What I don't understand is why the thumbnails of my photos that are more than 6 months old no longer bring up the full-size image. ???

I don't think the posts by @Tank (https://www.ngaugeforum.co.uk/SMFN/index.php?action=profile;u=2) and @Railwaygun (https://www.ngaugeforum.co.uk/SMFN/index.php?action=profile;u=941) are particularly helpful in this instance, and rather smack of, I'm alright Jack, screw you at least @Bealman (https://www.ngaugeforum.co.uk/SMFN/index.php?action=profile;u=255) has the decency to come out and say that it's not good enough.
On a personal note, I think they method and limitations on uploading photo and video to the forum is ridiculous, it should be streamlined and simplified.
I fail to believe that, in this day and age, there is not a SMF or third party plugin for the forum that will accept any image posted and auto resize it for forum use. And for two members of (albeit voluntary) staff to wash their hands of the issue frankly, sucks  :veryangry:
So chaps, sort the forum out and make it accessible for all please.

I'm using this site to re-size my photos at the moment
https://picresize.com/edit
I have to upload the photo I want onto the site, resize it to 800 resolution, then save & download it onto my laptop. I'm then able to upload it onto my threads here.
All a bit more complicated & time consuming than the old way of just finding the photo on your computer & uploading it.

Cheers, Stu

I can't believe you said that!  I certainly did not have the attitude of "screw you". :veryangry:  I asked the OP what size photo they were posting awaited an answer.  I have an iPhone and don't own another phone.  What you're saying is ridiculous!

I've spent hundreds of pounds and time on a new gallery, which after uploading, found that it doesn't include an important feature - so can't be used until the author of the software makes changes.  I know more than anyone on here what a headache it is.  There isn't anything available with all of the features that I've paid for, and can handle the huge about of GB that this forum uses, but feel free to go and check for yourself @Lawrence (https://www.ngaugeforum.co.uk/SMFN/index.php?action=profile;u=16)

@Tank (https://www.ngaugeforum.co.uk/SMFN/index.php?action=profile;u=2) sorry Tank my post last night was aimed more at Samsung saving photos as a totally different file type to what can be posted not at failings of the forum, I'm not particularly savvy in all computing so my rant was more at my own frustration not knowing how to change it all around to work.

I remember all the hassle you went through upgrading the forum and obviously the cost that was put into it. I don't feel there's anything wrong with the forum (with my basic knowledge) now I've remembered how to add pictures I wont have anything to get wound up by, well at least on the forum.

No problem at all, I didn't take anything you said as negative and always try to be helpful.  However, I don't like being attacked by people on an open forum for something that they don't know about.  That's the internet for you though.

I personally don't find uploading photos to be too much of a problem. What I don't understand is why the thumbnails of my photos that are more than 6 months old no longer bring up the full-size image. ???

It is a bit weird but copying/pasting the BB code still brings the pic up in the post you're putting it into. Strange. A job for Muldur & Scully, maybe.

I just uploaded a photo first time on my iPhone to the forum.  No issue at all.

How large is the photo, as there is a limit?

he's using an (Android) Samsung phone - do they not save as JPG?

i'm an apple only shop and can upload from Iphone/ipad/Big Mac with no problems

there is a 2Mb limit on file sizes

To allay confusion... ohhhh there seems to be a lot of it...

We fixed the 2mb file size bug a few weeks back so it could fully allow people to upload from the latest iphones etc if your photo is under 8mb now..... however (i dont own an android) so was unaware the photos on the newest ones are now around 12mb and not always (depending on your app and ice cream version) in a jpg format... for this i apologise.  Tomorrow from my sun lounger i shall correct this bug too... best to drop me a pm as its always better than a rant then we can fix forward... @Bealman (https://www.ngaugeforum.co.uk/SMFN/index.php?action=profile;u=255)  the old gallery is still there but slowed down the forum and the writer of the smf code for it had trouble moving everything hence why older pics are not available im afraid id love to get that bit fixed but its unlikely.... then lets talk compression..... we compress but only if your original file is of the acceptable size so from some point tomorrow once the sun is high and the gin is over the yard arm we will have a 16mb photo limit

Ttfn.... all donations to itsbloodyhothere@thongsforthememories.com

Yes, thanks Nobby, I had noticed that and also the slideshow feature still brings up full-size older images. ???

Re the new limit of file sizes (12mb??) - when do we have to buy more disc storage?? the bigger the images we have to store.....

Why shouldn't we have a limit on file size? the Forum s/w obviously has some limitations, which will be fixed RSN, but we still have to live within them.

I'm sorry that @Lawrence (https://www.ngaugeforum.co.uk/SMFN/index.php?action=profile;u=16) was upset by my post , but we have to work within constraints, and will have to do so for the foreseeable future. I did state what works for me but there are so many devices out there that it is difficult to keep up with today's new improved ( and non-standard ) phones.

We Mods are all volunteers, and Tank's and other's efforts have made us the largest UK online forum ( nearly 7000 members). We provide a 24hr service, supporting members and visitors. and luckily objectionable comments  are rare and we take them in our stride.

the Forum format is friendly and (fairly) easy to use, and a vast improvement on mail lists / bulletin boards. However It is  not perfect. and we have to work within limitations set by the s/w developers but its what we have and we all have to work with it.

We do need to revise the instructions for posting images, and try and improve the process as much as we can, preferably before the next Millennium!

We will try harder.

Well said nick

to be honest its taken me a while to work out what to, and thank you Tank and the moderators.  we appreciate you

the Forum format is friendly and (fairly) easy to use. should there be simple instructions available for those who are not technology minded  posted every now and then just as an aide memoire ????

@Railwaygun (https://www.ngaugeforum.co.uk/SMFN/index.php?action=profile;u=941) please see my post to @Tank (https://www.ngaugeforum.co.uk/SMFN/index.php?action=profile;u=2)  and I also apologise to you and @Only Me (https://www.ngaugeforum.co.uk/SMFN/index.php?action=profile;u=1328), my rant was about MY inability to post a picture and I'm sorry for the fallout that has followed.

I was missing for 6months with work and had totally forgotten how to post pictures.

Now I know how to do it I don't see any problems with the forum at all, other then the flak you have all recieved in reaction to my post.

I would like to make clear I did not feel I got the "I'm alright Jack" response from anyone. Will upping the size of photos cause any of the dramas that the Gallery caused when the upgrade took place? I'm sure the last thing the forum would want is delays and dramas caused as a result of adding massive pictures.

Noooooo please don't. I'm very sorry for the agro caused by my lack of computer phone based knowledge and all the fallout that followed.

I will try to get pictures of my stripped Inspection Saloon and add to my topic from yesterday and see what happens.

@Only Me (https://www.ngaugeforum.co.uk/SMFN/index.php?action=profile;u=1328) I will try to attach pictures in the next half hour and let you know, have another few G&Ts to chill out after the stressful day and I'll see what happens  :beers:

For clarity, I wasn't upset by your post or Chris's, my comments were designed to illicit a positive response and, despite some unsavoury comments aimed my way, a positive response was indeed forthcoming which will benefit all members of the forum. And my skin is suitably thickened.

FYI, I can assure you I don't need reminding of what mods do on the forum, initially it was just Tank and yours truly.

As for file size, is it possible to purchase an SMF plugin that will handle uploaded images and auto resize them to a standard size (eg 2mB) then overwrite the uploaded image to save space or we could be into Terra bites before we know it.

......my comments were designed to illicit a positive response

So you insult people to get a positive response.  That makes sense!

Paul started just over a week ago by tweaking settings for mobile phones.  Above my head as to what he did, but I know I adjusted some settings a couple of times and Paul did some more work on it today.  Thank you Paul.

As I explained, I have purchased a new gallery for the forum which includes all kinds of wonderful things.  Sadly the author isn't being helpful with something that needs changing.  Having spent hundreds of pounds on it, I don't have the resources right now to have someone else finish it off for me, and I have added problems at home which have been going on for months.  I wish that there were simple Plugins, but SMF doesn't use them.  This is great for fully customising SMF forums, but tricky in other aspects.  Mainly at the moment that the gallery I bought is not to be customised, other than by the original author.
