As you may know the railway in Britain is celebrating its 200th anniversary in 2025. There are lots of events planned so if you want to see what is happening, there is a dedicated website for it at:

#Railway200? #WhistleUp200?
2025 marks 200 years since the world's first passenger train, hauled by George Stephenson's Locomotion No.1, carried more than 400 people along the Stockton and Darlington Railway on the 27th September of that year. The landmark event drew crowds of up to 40,000 people and marked the birth of modern passenger train travel.
To start the year of the 'Railway 200' celebrations, heritage railways around the UK - and abroad - are hosting a 'whistle-up' at 12pm on 1st January 2025 whereby locomotives will sound their whistles and horns at 12pm.
The public are also invited to get involved so here is my contribution - a few videos of train whistles I have recorded over the years.
Firstly we have locomotives from the 'big four':
GWR Castle class 4-6-0 number 5043 'Earl of Mount Edgcumbe' passing Wilmcote with the return working of 'The Shakespeare Express. This is one of most regular steam hauled workings on the national rail network so thought this would be a good one to include.
LMS 5MT 4-6-0 number 44932 at Ingrow West on the Keighley and Worth Valley Railway.
SR Battle of Britain 4-6-2 number 34067 'Tangmere' at Preston.
LNER A1 class 4-6-2 number 60163 'Tornado' at Manchester Piccadilly - a new build locomotive based on original designs. I have included this as this video also features the Class 390 'Pendolino - a tilting train.
BR class 40 locomotive number 40013 'Andania' at Manchester Piccadilly.
LMS 3F Fowler 'Jinty' class 0-6-0T number 47298 at Ramsbottom station on the East Lancashire Railway. I have included this to show how small tank engines were an important part of the rail network and not just large tender engines.
Hunslet 0-4-0ST 779 'Holy War' at the Bala Lake Railway. I have included this for 2 reasons. Firstly, the Bala Lake Railway is one of many narrow gauge railways in the UK and are popular tourist attractions. Secondly, Hunslet were a huge manufacturer of railway engines and built hundreds of both steam and diesel engines for industrial use.
Class 43 HST numbers 43159 and 43089 at Bury Bolton Street on the East Lancashire Railway. The 'class 43' was also known as the 'Intercity 125' and one of most iconic diesel locomotives in the UK since the age of steam.
Finally we end with a whistle-up at the Statfold Barn Railway in Staffordshire featuring all of the locomotives that had taken part in the 'Hunslet 150' gala back in July 2021.
A BIG THANK YOU to everyone in the heritage railway movement for keeping these wonderful steam engines and railways alive. Long may it continue!

Check the spelling of Strathspey
Srath Spè is Scottish Gaelic. English isn't the only language in this wide World.

Dàmh Shrath Spè is Scottish Gaelic for Strathspey Ox - the spelling changes with context. Four decades have past since I studied/used Gaelic. Language is living history and all history has the potential to change with new information or interpretation.

before posting the link!
Booking opened at 9 this morning and I couldn't even get a number in the queue till gone 11. Hope you're successful in the end.
Well I got Taylor Swift tickets without issue, but no chance on this one! Was in the holding page, which yo-yo'd between 35 minutes and 3 hours. Eventually did count down to 0, and I got the above. Madness. I'm going to assume it's a wildly sub-standard website, rather than genuinely overwhelming traffic!
I note Polmadie is having an open day in September too under the "Rail 200" banner, which says it's just general admission, tempted to mosey along to that (albeit a 1,000 mile 'mosey').
We're pleased to announce that Alstom will host The Greatest Gathering – the UK's largest gathering of historic rail vehicles – to celebrate Railway200!
Join us at our historic Litchurch Lane Works in Derby between 1 and 3 August 2025.
Come see over 50 magnificent trains that have shaped rail history and enjoy family-friendly activities as part of this unique celebration!

Some people are managing to get tickets, so it'll just be a lottery on who gets them. I'm astonished it's proving so popular.

Was supposed to be going with my mate, but he's broken. So, I have a spare ticket.
Gates open at 10:00 and I want to be in line no later than 09:30. So probs leaving Oxford ~07:00. That'll allow me ~30 minutes for diverting to pick someone up on route.
I'll be taking one of the routes below. So if you fancy it drop me a PM. I'll probs check-in later ~21:00 to see if there's been any interest. If there's multiple interest, I'll likely pick the shortest diversion. But I'd also give priority to an iPhone user over Android - Apple Find My is very handy for regrouping at closing time!

It was a good day out and worth the journey from Kent to see it. With so many people attending there was always going to be a queue and there was. I joined the queue at 10:26, my watch says it took 47 minutes to cover 1.2km. It was odd that as the queue went along Litchurch Lane and Osmastron Road, another queue went in the opposite direction from the entrance along Litchurch Land and was only about 20 metres long. More queues for refreshments later.
The exhibits were good and varies, normal depot safety rules were cancelled allowing everyone to get close to there favourite locos. I stood on some track and had Jubilee class Sierra Leone come straight towards me and stop a couple of metres away separated by just a metal barrier. There was a good selection of model layouts inside, and trade stands which I managed to avoid.
So where are all the photos for us members who couldn't go for various reasons .such as me having to use a 4 wheeled walking aid now and knowing how difficult it would be ,Haveing been to a Crewe open day years ago when I could walk without an aid .

I spoke briefly to someone who attended Derby today (Sat). Apparently Preserved (old) buses were being use to ferry visitors from Derby bus station to the site - but being 'old' they were definitely NOT accessible to wheelchairs. He said a couple of newer low-floor buses were available but he didn't see them used - he saw someone in a wheelchair making their own way - and it was a considerable distance. Once on the site, a demonstration ride on a Class 345 was only accessible by steps! Absolutely unbelievable in 2025! 0/10 for the organizers. Try better in 2125.
The whole site is not well suited to wheelchairs. It's a working yard, so that isn't entirely surprising. They were very upfront about this beforehand. I did see a few people with various mobility aids, but frankly it would have been a very limiting experience all around. Your post is unfair IMO.

I think Thursday was the The Greatest Cleaning! Every loco and bit of stock had been spruced up and turned out beautifully. All the unseen Minions deserve a round of applause :claphappy:
Went on Sunday - I was on the hoof from 9.30 am until 5pm including the trudge to and from the car park; it was bloody AWESOME! What a 'show'! Kicking myself for missing the 9F, but all the other boxes were ticked. So glad I was able to get a ticket.
In no particular order, and just the tip of the iceberg of what was there, the first one says it all -

I don't know about "So many trains" it was too many for me! I missed recording those two big vinyl 50s, which I can live with. 90018, I didn't even see it!
Too. Many. Trains. Enough to keep celebrity liveried model re-releases going for years.

Nah, no, nope! I LOVE that there were
SO many there: e.g. I'd never even
seen a 'Peak' in the metal before I went - I lost count of how many there were, I like that some had to be caged like dangerous wild animals beyond visitor-reach because there was nowhere else to put them, I even love the fact that I missed some stuff despite really putting my back into trying to get round the whole enormous site - because that way I still have things to track-down on their home turf.
I'm new to all this of course, which skews my impressions - a year ago I had no idea that so many locomotive classes had survived and been preserved, even the most prosaic sorts, and am very grateful to the wonderful people that give so much to keep them 'alive', and I'm especially grateful to all those who herded them into one place for our entertainment! What a trip! :claphappy:

Behind 35028 were 46115

Plenty of clips on YouTube.
Anybody get an example of the commemorative N-gauge 7-plank wagon?
