I am sure that many of you are aware that Mick had to go into hospital recently. On Tuesday he had a triple bypass on the old ticker and having spoken to his mum, initially all seemed to have gone well. I have just spoken to her again this morning and it would appear Mick has unfortunately taken a bit of a backward step. They had to shock his heart back into rhythm as he had an irregular heart beat. It would also seem he has had difficulty eating and has not slept since the operation. He has now been sedated in an effort to allow him to relax sufficiently to try to get some rest.
No doubt he is in the best place to make a full recovery and hopefully things will start to pick up again soon.
I know he has a great number of friends on here, so will call his mum early next week and will let you know how he is progressing.
I am sorry to hear that, when you are next in touch, please give him my best wishes
Regards,
Alex
Thanks for the update, Lawerence. We are all wishing him a speedy recovery. Keep us posted. Trust him to be awkward!
Best wishes from me too. Always been helpful and informative in his posts.
If anyone is going to visit NPN (Mick) can they give him my regards and I hope he makes a rapid recovery.
Bob
Sorry to hear that NPN's (Mick's) recovery is not going to plan and that he is experiencing problems. Seems the awkward old b****r is running true to form.
Hope to see him back in rude health and contributing his own unique form of wit and knowledge to the forum soon.
Best wishes Mick
Thanks to Lawrence for the NPN news.
All best wishes for a quick and painless-as-can-be recovery, I hope he gets back in the swing of things as soon as possible.
Lawrence, thanks for keeping us up to date with Micks progress, we are all wishing him well and hope to hear better news next week.
Ray
I believe Mick is in Blackpool Hospital and I wish him well and a speedy recovery.
The partner of my brother-in-law who is currently out with us in Tenerife at the moment works in Blackpool Hospital part-time, and if Mick is still in there when she goes home will ask her to make enquiries and pass on our best wishes.
Thanks for the update Lawrence. As I have met Mick twice and my wife has also met him, we are very concerned.
Best wishes and speedy recovery from me..
Marco
Best wishes from me and all my trains, even though I'm sure there are some he wouldn't approve of.
I have been wondering/worrying about NN and I'm very grateful that you have updated us. I hate to hear he isn't recovering as well as he could be, though with open heart surgery, what he is going through isn't too uncommon. Hopefully he will be back on here and educating us all, very soon. Please pass along my best to him, as well.
Get well soon!
NeMo
I too hope that things start to go better for Mick and he is soon "back on track".
Steve
Get well soon Nobby.
Puts everything in perspective.

I would like to send a little "get well" gift to NN. Does anyone have his mailing address or his mum's address? Or does anyone know of a way I could send something directly to the hospital for him? If not, @Lawrence (http://www.ngaugeforum.co.uk/SMFN/index.php?action=profile;u=16) , would you be willing to ring and ask his mum if I can send her something to take him? I just want to send him a Wagon or something appropriate for one of his two layouts with a little note that says "Wishing you a speedy recovery. -NGaugeUS and all the rest of us at the NGF." If someone does have mailing info for him or his mum, please PM it to me rather than post it here! (I'm sure he'd rather his name and address not be posted on a publicly viewable forum!)
Thanks!
-Philip
So sorry to hear this. Mick has always kept in touch with me (via the forum PM) during Mrs "H's" illness, he is one of the really good guys! As long as its not a sense of humour bypass, I am sure he will soon be back to even better than his old self.
Wishing him/ You Mick, a speedy recovery.
Jerry & Caroline.
I will leave it until after Lawrence's update early next week, and if Mick is still in hospital
then i will take a trip up there to see him.Hopefully that won't be necessary and he will be at his mums recovering in a few days.
Thanks for keeping us informed,Lawrence........... :NGaugersRule:
That sounds rotten for him. I have my fingers crossed that he's feeling well soon. (It's hard to type with your fingers crossed, so he'd best get well soon).
If you see Mick, and if he still has his sense of humour, tell him I said to pull himself together and stop looking for sympathy from the nurses.
Here's wishing NN a rapid and full recovery..
:beers:
Certainly hoping that Mick makes a full recovery.
Thanks for the update

I'm sure he is in good hands and a fighter so this is just a temporary set back but best wishes anyway. Thank you Lawrence.

Hoping he makes a speedy recovery.
All the best to you Mick. I thought something must be wrong as I hadn't heard back. :-\
Thanks for the post @Lawrence (http://www.ngaugeforum.co.uk/SMFN/index.php?action=profile;u=16)
Get well soon Mick. Your a good friend and I wish you a speedy recovery. I will catch up with you soon when your better and we can put the world to rights!
All the very best mate.
Thanks for the update Lawrence. Give Mick my best wishes and, only knowing him from reading his posts, I don't think he will be taking this lying down, (if you know what I mean :D). David.
Get well soon Mick, I only just heard the news and wish you a speedy recovery. The Forum just isn't the same without your humour and I wondered where you are. I hope the THB does the trick and I bet you are already shunting up and down the Ward, just make sure you stay on track. Cheers from George.
Thanks for the update Lawrence, when you next speak to him wish him a quick recovery from Pam and myself
Graham
Thanks for posting this Lawrence...please pass on my best wishes too.

Bad news, but let's look at the bright side. A triple by-pass is sort of like a rebore in a car. NPN will come out of this fitter than before.
But, in the meantime I wish Mick a speedy recovery and return to the rails.
Webbo
All the best and a speedy recovery from me as well, Mick.

Best wishes for a speedy recovery from me as well.
I sent Mick a message earlier in the week as I hadn't heard from or seen him, Lawrence's post shows why I'm still awaiting a response from him. I actually think he will just stay longer so he can get extra nurse time
(http://rs935.pbsrc.com/albums/ad195/Matthew_Colbath/Nurse.gif~c200)
Best wishes to NPN - Hope he is back and we'll soon..
I am sure when Mick gets out and has access to the forum again he will be delighted and embarrassed in equal measure with all the great comments on here :D
I have had several PMs from members asking for Micks address so they can send him a small get well gift.
I am sure you will understand that it really is not my place to give out someone else's address details.
If anyone wishes to send Mick anything I would be happy to receive any items, box them up and post them to him, so if you do wish to do that please PM me for my address and I will ensure they all get to him.
Don't worry I wont keep anything, wouldn't look right on my Japanese layout anyway ;D
May I join the well wishers, Mick is an inspiration to all of us and I look forward to the return of his sound advice and good humour.
Awesome. From my distant vantage point, I'll leave out the trinkets (though I bet another Brunswick green class 20 would be perfectly acceptable)....

Very much looking forward to a resumption of his great wit, advice and encouragement as soon as possible.
And insights into his musical tastes.
Get well Mick and hope you feel top of the world soon.
Best wishes for a speedy recovery from me too. It's far too quiet without NPN's witty comments. Looking forward to a flood of them when he catches up.

Agree with all the comments on here about Mick - one of the most supportive people on the forum. Lets hope we hear from him very soon.

I hope Mick recovers quickly and well.
Best wishes to Nobby - wishing him a speedy and complete recovery!
Best wishes for a speedy recovery Mick.
It is heartwarming to read just how many members are rooting for our friend!
I know that the thread about myself brought tears to my eyes that so many wanted to wish me well in my struggles.
As like everyone else I am concerned about our friend and wish him all the best and hope that he has a speedy recovery.
Regards, Peter.
Get well soon Mick. This place is not the same without you.
Paddy
Just spoken to Micks' mum and am really pleased to report some better news. :)
They gave him some pretty heavy sedation which knocked him out for about a day and a half, when they finally woke him he was a lot calmer and is able to sleep a little naturally now, he has also started eating a little too.
There was some congestion on his lungs which has cleared and an angiogram would suggest the operation itself has gone well. He has even taken a couple of very short walks.
Hopefully he will be out of intensive care and on to a regular ward either today or tomorrow, which will really signal a return to the road to recovery.
Those who wish to send anything to Mick are still welcome to post them to me and I will put them altogether and post them down to his Mums house where he will be recuperating for a few weeks before returning home. I think I have replied to all the PMs for my address, but if you have not heard from me please send me a reminder :confused1: :D
Brilliant to hear Mick is on the mend, thank you Lawrence for the update.
Excellent news! Thanks for the update.
Coming to this late, I'd like to add my best wishes for a speedy recovery also.

Are we putting a get together on in York?
Myself, Lawrence, Scotsoft and a certain Newport Nobby invaded York for a weekend in October 2012, primarily to visit the coveted rail museum. After an excellent Friday evening meal, a good Saturday tour of the museum we proceeded to get a little merry on local Ale in a multitude of Yorks finest taverns and then visit a greasy kebab shop on the Sat evening......
Sunday morning we all felt a little worse off......., I totally blame the dodgy kebab that Lawrence forced us all to sample. ::)
Regarding a meet up this year? Why not?
Perhaps we could start a new thread and look at the possibilities?
York is a fine place and I really enjoyed the museum and it was great to meet up with John, Lawrence and of course Mick.
It might be a good chance for newer members to meet up and form friendships like we did nearly four years ago.
I would be one of the first to volunteer to join the next trip - I think that a kebab would be a fitting start to the evening - I love em!!
Regards,
Alex

Latest news from Mick's Mum is a little mixed but mostly positive I think.
He is now on a regular ward and is feeling a little better, sleeping and eating are still providing some challenges but generally have improved. The big fly in the ointment is that he is going to need a pacemaker fitted as the old ticker isn't quite doing it's thing. Hopefully that will be done next week but, apparently, he wont be able drive for 6 months after fitting, don't know if it affects the sat nav or the radio :confused1: but that is potentially a lot of shows he will miss, someone will not be a happy bunny ;D
Anyway his Mum seemed a lot more positive about things but it could still be another week before he gets out. Fingers crossed that this next procedure goes well and he is home soon.
Thanks to those that have sent cards, I am still waiting on a couple more to arrive then I'll get them all sent down, looks like you have about a week to get them to me if you want anything sent to himself.
Thanks for the update, Lawrence. Indeed a rocky road. All the best to Mick. :beers:
George
Hopefully all continues to improve.
Thanks for the update.
Please pass my best wishes on to Mick.
:NGaugersRule:
Thank you Lawrence.
And I hate that he has to spend extra time in hospital and needs another surgery, but he probably really does need a pacemaker, given what has been said about his heart. Having one put in is very minor compared with having to deal with the fallout of not having had it when you needed it. At any rate, I'm very glad he's improving, however slowly. Let's just hope he is back on here soon! :) At this point I am sure train withdrawl is why he is having trouble sleeping ;)

Lets see if I can make a 'punny' tribute post in the style of the man himself:
Isn't it strange and ironic that a guy known to us all as NPN is now relying on a transistor powered pump?

Must say they have been great about it, I was very deferential (especially when Sister answered the phone!) apologised for bothering them and just asked nicely :D
I wasn't overly keen on calling because I did want to leave that to his mum and family but I got the go ahead from Micks' mum so was happy with that.
Not sure if/when he will be out today, but I should imagine we will all know when he suddenly reappears on here :)

If there are any late comers I shall redirect them if and when they arrive.

Just had a (very) quick chat with the old bugger himself. He has now returned to the bosom of his family, he is understandably very tired and it will obviously take a few days for him to find his feet but I sincerely believe things are on the up and it wont be long before the old bugger is on here again tormenting us all ;)
That is indeed very good news.
Looking forward to him appearing back on here.
Thanks Lawrence for keeping us all up to date.
Great news. He always was one for bosoms :D

Do you not have model railways/railroads to build and maintain rather than make embarrassing remarks about a silly old fool who is so woozey he is having trouble typing anything :-[

Welcome back young Mick. :claphappy: :claphappy: Its time to run those locos that have been pining and stagnating so long.
Must have some good looking nurses in Blackpool Hospital - otherwise why else would you have prolonged your stay there!?.
Next time we are visiting family in Chorley - perhaps we can arrange a meet up, it's years since I was in Leyland, I used to take a girlfriend to Worden Park there when I was at school.
All the best for a speedy recovery and some Lancashire humour on here.

Delighted to have you back!

Seriously, for a moment, It was a joy to see your name on here again Mick...

"Spinach"!!! heaven forbid.
What a Lancashire man needs to recover is plenty of "Hot Pot","Butter Pies", "Tripe & Trotters", "Parched Peas", and "Chorley Cakes".
If he is allowed to partake of a little alcohol - then a "Mackeson" stout "does you good", as they say, it is what my Dad used to drink well into his 90's, and he lived to be just 2 months short of 100.
A friend of mine had an op like yours Mick. When he was back home his wife was very surprised to see him drinking red wine at breakfast. His wife was shocked by this as although he was a bit of a boozer he always waited until a respectable hour before the first drink of the day. His explication :
"Darling, my doctor told me to have a glass of red wine with every meal"
Best regards,
Joe
P.S. He is South African

Too quiet here without you, Mick.
I bet the nurses are enjoying the peace now you're gone.
As it happens... I don't have a bloody layout to be building. Did you miss my post? The thing is in bits and in storage waiting for a permanent home. So, thanks for rubbing salt in that wound. Nothing to do here but fuss and worry.
(And build Airfix racing car kits. And tank kits. And ship kits. And collect rolling stock. And build my space shuttle launch pad model. And all the things on my wife's to do list).
Take it easy and enjoy your NGF celebrity status.

Jerry - wherabouts is Lucca where you live?
In May the misses and I are staying by Lake Garda with trips to Venice & Verona thrown in.
I personaly have never visited Italy before, but the wife has been to Venice and wanted to return.
Stragely enough an Italian chap from Venice used to run a local Bar here in Los Cristianos (called "Bellinis"), and his name was Luca, but he and his family returned to Venice some years ago now, and he used to serve up some great Italian Lasangna in his Bar every Thursday night.
Welcome back Mick. Having been off the forum for a few weeks I missed the fact that you had gone in to hospital but I know sveral people who were well treated at Blackpool Vic. This thread was well established before I caught up with it so I didn't join in but now I can't resist joining in the homecoming welcome. As others have said you really have been missed. Hi all
Funnily enough just as I was reading this thread the phone went and Yes it was Mick
He seems to be doing fairly well he is still a little short of breath but getting there
The reason he hasn't been on the forum is because he is struggling a little with his eyesight following his operations
But rest assured he will be back to his normal self soon

I'm pleased to say I have discharged myself from my Mother's care and so yesterday was reunited with my lovely cat (Hookey) in the comfort of my own house cuddled up together. Owing to the difficulties experienced in my op my eyesight is still not 100% but I do feel heaps better (thanks, Mum!).
Lots of follow up appointments with consultants and my GP to follow, and I can't drive for many months to come, but I'm sure I'll get there.
I have been staggered by the sheer volume and sentiments of this thread so, again, must thank you all, particularly those who sent cards/pressies either directly or via Lawrence (who himself has been off work ill since I went in for my op).
With so much to catch up on I cannot say normal service has been resumed but I'll try and be here with any help and as much banter as I can muster ;D

Great to see you back home mate. I'll give you a bell soon👍
The latest update on this continuing saga ()
I was at Blackpool hospital today to see the heart surgeon. Before my appointment I had chest XRay, ECG and blood pressure tests. Blood pressure was higher than I would have liked but I do suffer from 'white coat' syndrome (and I don't mean lunatic asylums). The surgeon said everything was fine, that I was doing very well and that he had no need to see me again. I told him I have pains in my sternum and that when I cough or sneeze I get a pain in the right hand side of my chest. He repeated that more than one nurse had bounced on my chest during the operation in order to get my heart going again and that I was probably just getting cartilage pains.
I thanked him and told him that in the nicest possible way I didn't want to see him again either but that, if push came to shove, he would be my preferred option. I also discovered from him that the implanted 'black box' (correct name is I.C.D. = implantable cardioverter-defibrillator) is the latest model and costs £20,000 so I am surprised they fitted one really as it's worth more than I am!
I then had the hilarious thought that, as the device contains batteries, when I kick the bucket and am cremated, unless it is removed before the cremation I could actually explode (not that I would care at that point), thus causing those at the service to say they had a blast :smiley-laughing: :dighole:
The next major hurdle for me is an appointment with the 'black box' experts on the 26th May where I will need to establish how long the power pack lasts i.e. how frequently they'll have to open me up to put new batteries in it, and also discuss this damned 6 months no driving which, strictly speaking, ends on 2nd August.
Maybe I should have chosen a less drastic way to give up the fags, after all ::)
All good news, Mick. I hope the crematorium is well insured :D
Great News Mick, still hoping to make the NRM gathering so hope to see you there
:claphappy:
Yes glad to hear you have some good news, regarding the batteries it reminds me of the joke about a guy with a vibrator stuck up his ....... He went to the hospitial and they asked if he wanted it removing, he said no just change the batteries..... now I wonder if.......
Pity you were asleep when those nurses where bouncing on your chest,Eh........ ;)
Batteries... Don't they just pop open that little plastic door in your back and put fresh AAs in, like my Buzz Lightyear?
£20,000? They must be following the Kimbolted thread and want to see it finished.
All told it's scary stuff and you're a bit of a trooper. Glad to hear they are happy with you. Good luck with the DVLA business.
Great news Mick, August will come fast enough for you to drive, shame they could not fit you with rechargeable batteries then you could just plug your self into the mains lol.
Well done, Mick.
Always good to hear that 'The Man' doesn't want to see you again!
Re new batteries: Why don't you ask to have fitted one of those connectors like they use for electric cars but a bit smaller perhaps. Better still, a USB socket so you can recharge while surfing the forum! :D
Good luck with the no driving thing - a real PITA.
Dave G
All good news Mick.
Cheers
That's good news nice to hear somebody is doing well for a change all the best
On the implant I am afraid that at the end of the day somebody has to pay to remove it before cremation uit they might want it back!
I've often heard you could raise the roof :D and if you're gonna go, go out with a bang. Good luck to you. :beers:
Don't worry Mick, they do remove pacemakers before they screw the lid Down. There are 2 reasons for this...1 they don't like it when the customer starts knocking on the inside of the lid...2 they don't like loud noises to interrupt the ceremony.

For anyone still interested in how things are going.................
Latest Update 27.5.16
I saw the defibrillator implant consultant this morning at Blackpool hospital and was told he was signing me off and back to the guy in cardiology at Chorley. It took me a while to get over to him what I needed from him to ensure the soonest retrieval of my driving licence but, basically, as the 6 months since the implant isn't up until 6th August, he can't fill out any form for the DVLA but told me I could, in effect, send in my forms now. I just want to ensure that, given the OK by him, the DVLA then don't take 6 weeks to do their bit as that would mean no licence until mid September and I have places to go/people to see. Believe me, I'll be pestering him!
I then saw the defibrillator team who supplied me with a 'black box' which automatically takes readings from the implant and sends them to Blackpool via a USB Dongle. They recommended I send them the data a week before the 6th August but said that provided the implant did not give me a shock the consultant should just rubber stamp the papers. I asked about the implant's battery and was informed the lifespan of the battery was 6-8 years and then it would require a minor operation under a local anaesthetic to take out the unit and replace the battery, hopefully in/out of hospital the same day.
I am entering my third week of physiotherapy at the local leisure centre (Tuesdays & Thursdays at 8 – 9 a.m.) and am enjoying it immensely. Happily a new chap joined yesterday who had a defibrillator implanted a month before me so I'll be able to track how he gets on with his licence.
I do get chest pains but it's not anything to do with my heart. I think that as I'm exercising more than I've done for years it's putting undue strain on my sternum which, of course, was sawn in twain for my heart operation. Add to that the sternum is calcifying over the metal wires holding everything in place.
Life without the use of a car is still very humdrum and frustrating but I'm starting to worry less and less that I might have a heart attack at any moment although any 'twinge' in the heart area does me no good at all. At least I don't cringe at some of the stuff in 'Holby City' any more!
Thanks for reading this.
Glad things are going in the right direction NPN - long may they continue to do so :beers:
Good to hear things are heading in the right direction for you. Hopefully the license will be back as expected.
Just looked at today's date and it will be 2 years ago tomorrow that I had stents fitted in the old ticker. I'd had a heart attack 8 days earlier, and thought the pain I woke up with was due to sleeping awkwardly. Unaware of a heart attack I drove to my GPs, but about my arthritic knees. Anything else he asked, to which I replied "well, I woke up some days back with a lot of pain in my shoulder/upper chest area. An ECG revealed a heart attack had indeed occurred. Straight into Truro hospital, aspirin drip to thin the blood, and stents fitted next morning. Chatting to my surgeon he said that in his opinion you can inherit certain factors that can play a part in your chances of a heart attack. This he said is why some can eat fatty/high cholesterol foods with little or no effect.
I consider myself very fortunate to have woken, because some 60% who have a heart attack in the early hours fail to wake. Nowadays I have nowhere near the energy and get up and go I previously had, and tire quickly. However, I try to enjoy days to the full and do what I want to do, trying not to put things off to "another day" So guys, if you get some pain as I did then get it checked out !!! ( I never had any nurses bouncing on my chest....drat)
Glad things appear to be progressing well Mick.
Great news and August will be here before you realise it Mick and then you will be free again. Hopefully the meds I'm on will hold such an operation at bay for a while as I'd be completely lost without my car here.
Good to hear that your keeping up your spirits and wishing you the best of luck with the DVLA .
Regards
Bob
Good stuff. Does this mean you might be mobile in time for the N Gauge Show?
Well done that bloke.
Physio/gentle work out is what I do 3 times a week (mostly). Great to stretch out a bit and as you say, meet other folk often in similar health situations.
Looks like you'll be mobile well before the end of the summer. That has to be good news.
Keep up the good work and thanks for the update.
Dave G
Good to hear your news!!
And please teach me more N gauge stuff!!
Best regards.
I am pleased that your progress is positive and you are enjoying the physiotherapy.
It does sound like you are going to have patience with your driving and I am sure it will happen eventually, but the doctors have your best interests in mind.
Cheers John.

As for the nurses, I have already commented about the size of them at Blackpool so it's probably no wonder I still get pain! :-\

Good stuff. Does this mean you might be mobile in time for the N Gauge Show?
When I told the consultant I have places to be and people to see, TINGS is exactly what I have in mind :D I generally go on the Saturday but either day will do for me this year.

Good to hear your news!!
And please teach me more N gauge stuff!!
Best regards.
I've taught you something? ???
There has to be a first for everything, I suppose ;D
Great news, Mick!! As you know, I broke a couple of ribs last time I was in Blackpool, but not me sternum, thankfully. :beers:

Good news Mick and best of luck with the driving licence  David
Nice one Mick:)
Its progress Mick, so it's all good news!
With all these exercises at the Leisure Centre you'll end up fitter than before.

Good to talk to you the other day mate. Im glad things are taking shape with the DVLA (your still in the tunnel but at least the light at the end is in sight)
Goes without saying that we are all behind you and if ever you need anything, (near or far) just give us a shout. I know that's easy to say from behind a keyboard and I appreciate the fact that in reality you want to drive (and can) but just bear with it Mick. Not long now.
Hope to see you in York in the Autumn, will definitely speak to you sooner. Give us a shout whenever you feel pal
All the best Dave (Fay sends her love and says hi also )
Hi Mick I am pleased to hear you have some good news and are on the mend. Hopefully you will get your driving license back soon, then we will have another old duffer on the road. I remember ringing the doctors last year with pains in my chest, I think I spent the night before under my layout, they did all the checks ecg etc and then told me I was alright, and then she bollocked me for wasting her time, you can't win. Keep the exercises up mate it all helps, I have just walked 10 miles today around the local canal.
Good luck with August. Not being able to drive is one of the things I most dread for myself. Even the odd few days when I've not been able to following a relatively minor operation have had me feeling like a prisoner!
All the best Mick, we had an 80 year old lady in our complex that had been fitted with a Dfib when she was years younger, I remember she had to get her batteries changed but thankfully she returned to her old self by annoying the crap out of everyone, written by another heart survivor.
