Well, the cataract op seemed to go well. No pain at all and only a slight prodding  sensation as the surgeon worked on it. Very quick, I doubt it took him much more than 5 minutes.

I've spent all afternoon just resting and only decided to try the PC a few minutes ago. Still somewhat blurry due to the eye watering and still having the eye shield on but, boy, are the colours and contrast an improvement, it's like having a completely different screen.
Just a slight grit in the eye sensation but no general pain, although I do get a sharp ache around the eye if looking at a bright scene - I'm sure that'll go with time and, once the eye shield comes off I can always don sunglasses for the time being.

All this talk of cataract operations has got me thinking that it's maybe something I need to investigate.

My optician says that I have the beginnings of cataracts in both eyes but that it's not too bad at the moment.

My vision is fairly good, I think, but I struggle a bit with very close up work especially around railway modelling.

However, my biggest problem is driving in the dark. I used to find it almost easier to drive in the dark but now I struggle extremely badly.
In fact I no longer drive anywhere in the dark except very locally.

My question therefore is, would a cataract operation help with driving at night?

Haven't tried it yet - there hasn't even been a night since my op - but I'd be surprised if it didn't help.

I've found headlights dazzling for a couple of years but had put it down to headlights, especially LED ones, getting so much brighter. However, since my pre-op assessment I've realised that the headlight dazzle was exactly the same pattern as that when they shone bright lights into my eyes. Although it's early hours since my op, if I look at a small bright light source now, I'm definitely not seeing that pattern in the eye that was done today.

@port perran , I could have written your post myself. I don't like driving after dark these days - the half hour drive home from my stepson's is about the most I can do.  I expect I am developing cataracts too, but it sounds like they are a simple operation. Great to hear yours went well, Chris.

For a few days after I had mine done, I was saying to Louisa that it felt like I had something in my eye. As Louisa replied, "You have - a lump of plastic".

That is a bit difficult to answer Martin. I still get dazzled by oncoming lights if I have to drive at night, but the dazzle is crystal clear!

I used some of those  and they really did help. No good in daytime but brilliant at night, they only really filtered out very bright white lights and didn't affect dimmer whites or other colours much at all. Had to stop using them, unfortunately, when I needed prescription specs for driving because they wouldn't fit over the prescription ones.

Hopefully I won't need specs for driving once this eye has settled down and the other one's been done too, so I'll then be able to dig the yellow ones out and try them again.

The cataract op recovery is going very nicely. The ache around the eye when in a bright room or looking out at bright scene has now gone and all I have is an occasional "scratchy" sensation as if there's some grit in the eye, which should also go with time.

As to the results, wow, it's like someones been out and repainted the landscape in glorious technicolour and it's all nice and sharp - like moving from looking at a Turner painting to a Constable one. As well as that, I can see into shadows far better than before, so that should help to defeat the carpet monster when tiny things fall off my workbench 

Haven't tried driving yet (haven't actually needed to go anywhere) but I have been out and looked at a car numberplate nearer 30m away rather than the 20m minimum for driving - no problem reading it, so that's OK. I went out walking last night, waiting for cars to come along so I could see how the glare has been reduced - and it definitely has. There is some glare, but I can still see things just off to the side of the lights whereas with the eye that hasn't been done yet, no chance, it's just a mass of glare. So that's looking good too.

I do need reading glasses for anything closer than three or four feet away - but I've needed those for years so that's no hardship. When the other eye's been done as well I can go through the various strength eBay cheapies I have to determine which are the most suitable and either get more of the same or get some better quality ones of that strength.

I've got to go back in four weeks for a post-op checkup then, all being well, I should have the other eye done a fortnight or so after that. After, I guess, another four weeks it'll be off to the opticians to find out if I need specs for driving - from what I can see so far, I suspect not but better to be safe than sorry. Hopefully I won't and that'll be one layer of glass to not mist up on damp, cold mornings.
