Woo hoo.
The optometrist I saw this morning was very happy with how my first cataract op has settled and they had a cancellation so the second one gets done tomorrow morning, no fortnight's wait

Just having had the first one done was a revelation, getting a matching pair will be wonderful.

I found the second op to be less stressful and recovered a lot quicker. I had to get new spectacles as the two ops improved my vision so much.

If the second one recovers quicker, judging by my first one the second should be about recovered by today

I'm anticipating, based on the immediate results of the first one, that I won't need specs for driving but will for reading, using the computer and model-making. That'll be no hardship, I've been using reading specs for years anyway.

If I don't need specs for driving that'll be a big plus, one less layer of glass to mist up on damp cold mornings

As I said earlier, one of the best things I could have had done.  And you are correct when you talk about seeing colour - before my operations, I could see green fields but now I realise just how many different shades of green there are!

I don't know what my right eye was like pre-op (because I had nothing against which to compare it) but now that one's been sorted my left eye has a distinct red shift to the colours it sees, so most non-reds are a muddy shade of what they should be - and hopefully will be in less than 24 hours.

Living in the Emerald Isle you have more shades of green than those of us in continental Europe - 40 in the case of O'Rafferty's Motor car.

I had my second eye done last Friday. I've had to turn down the brightness of the computer screen as so much more light is entering my eye.

The cataract op went well, much the same as the first one. Although it's really too early to tell, there's plenty of colour in what I can see with the second eye. I won't be able to judge properly about sharpness until tomorrow, when the eye shield comes off and the pupil dilation has cleared. Looking good so far, though.

And looking even better today, now I've shed the eye shield. Final sharpness will probably take a few days to achieve but it's looking pretty well on par with the first eye, as are the wonderful colours that I couldn't see before

With the light at the end of the tunnel being the rapidly oncoming Christmas train... I've been back on eBay buying second hand tat for the train set I plan to build for my 4 1/2 year old (he's way too young for N-gauge).

Anyway, I picked up a slightly shabby Lima Class 33 for a measly £22 - described as a "fair runner", when I tried it the other day, it was decidedly stuttery and definitely not happy going backwards, mucho cutting out.

Anyway, it needed new traction tyres, which showed up this morning, so I figured - give it a good old clean & a service & new tyres, and see how it goes.


Blow me - I open it up & find it's got a DCC decoder in it!  So I gave it the service anyway, tried it again on DC (similar stuttery behaviour, maybe not quite so bad, but still not usable)... so I connected up my DCC-Ex setup, and damn - it runs as smooth as a baby's bottom! (Side note: Have 5 month old baby, can confirm smoothness).

£22 for a DCC fitted loco. Cool!

I thought I was being ripped off by Direct Line for my car insurance last year when they increased the premium by 53%. This year it's been increased by another 25% so that was the straw that broke the camel's back. By moving to another insurer I saved £300. That's 2 locos!!

(It has to be noted I have to actually speak to companies as I need to inform them I have a built in defibrillator so I can't just go to a comparison site and press buttons to do it all on line. If they're not told it gives them the ideal get out should anything happen)

Had my post-op checkup today, following my second cataract removal op.

The optometrist said that, from a point of view of his role, both my eyes are now "reassuringly boring" and there's nothing more that he needs to do - both eyes are visually well balanced and slightly better than 20/20 visual acuity.

All I have to do now is get another eye test at my local optician so that they can a) check for any aberrations that the clinic's tests weren't looking for and b) get a "baseline" test result so they have something to refer against should there be any changes in the future.
