the earlier crimson & cream would be very rare even (practically extinct) by the mid-60s.
Earlier than that, I would say. To judge by the photos in my book collection, there were hardly any around - certainly in the Southern region - after 1960.

Some of this depends upon location. South Wales for example tended to see different locomotives and a lot of coal and other heavy freight (eg steel), while the south west saw  a lot of parcels and was more thought of for its passenger services.

Funnily enough in the Janes Portfolio on Class 33s there's a picture of a brand new one (new in 1960) on a four car Mk.1 set all in Crimson/Cream. Certainly there were still a few on the WR in 1962, but it's very hard to nail down a single final date on something like this. Perhaps a trawl through contemporary RCTS records might help - however, in this case as we're talking late 60s they would be gone by then anyway.

Hi!

I have 'blood & custard', maroon and green Mk 1's on my layout which is set in the mid 50's to early 60's. However it sounds like they've talked you into the blue grey future!!  >:( >:(  :'(

Just joking. Actually with the passage of time, I've actually grown to almost tolerate the livery

George Steet is one of my favourite layouts - and it's blue!

Welcome to the forum!

Would I be correct in saying a Class 42 would also be suitable?

Some good deals on class 42's at the moment at https://railsofsheffield.com/search/search-results.aspx?searchTerm=farish+class+42 and http://by155w.bay155.mail.live.com/default.aspx#!/mail/InboxLight.aspx?n=154259704!n=247365373&fid=1&fav=1&mid=8811376f-3b14-11e2-8d76-002264c1d59e&fv=1 worth checking other retailers too. I have just bought one of these from Rails and it is a beautiful runner. Hope this helps and good luck with your layout

Thanks for the help everyone. Will stick with the grey/blue coaches then. Marty thanks for the link, looks a good deal so I've just bought one :)
