Motive Power for BR Departmental Stock

Hi everyone,

I hope that you are keeping well. 

I was wondering if there is a source of information that could enlighten me as to which locomotives (including livery) have been used to haul BR Departmental Stock, particularly Eras 4, 5, 6 and 7?

I have some items in BR Engineers Red, BR Black and some Olive Green and want to haul them using appropriate motive power.

In East Anglia in the 60s and 70s Permanent way trains were usually worked by class 31 and 37, singly, in two the same class, or 31+37 in multiple.

Era 7 maybe class 25, 31 , 37 in the NW which I model

For steam era I guess anything 'mixed traffic' goes, such as........(dependent on location)

For the BR Blue diesel era (my era!) departmental trains would be commonly hauled by the 'lower powered' locos. If I was doing the  same thing as you  (I haven't modelled British N to any volume since about 1978) I would choose a class 25 or class 31. The choice slightly depends on region. Towards the later end of the BR Blue era, class 37 or even 40 would have been increasingly used as they lost 'main' work to other classes.

In 1985 class 40s numbers 40012, 40060  ,40118 and 40135 were converted renumbered to 97407, 97405, 97408, 97406 for the c . 1985 crewe remodelling scheme on departmental work.

Steam - any goods or mixed traffic type. These were usually painted black during the period of interest (with or without lining).

Diesels - any Type 1, 2 or 3 (i.e. classes 20-37) were common up until the 1980s when type 4 & 5's began to be used more often. Livery would be green or blue depending on era.

The likes of classes 47, 50 and 56 didn't see much (if any) use on engineers trains until the 1980s.
