RhB shunter orange paint colour
« on: July 01, 2020, 01:31:37 PM »
Does anyone know a good match for the orange colour used on the Rhätische Bahn shunters? I've used Humbrol enamels for previous modelling, but I'm now persuaded to switch to acrylics. I'm brand agnostic, as long as prices aren't too silly. I also have an airbrush (and am learning how to use it).

Hi Jim. If it helps the colour is probably RAL 2009 "Traffic Orange". As is often the case with railway colours I can't find an equivalent in any of the hobby paint ranges but you could always get some mixed.
This place looks interesting for airbrush paints:

Yeah,  sites seem to be saying RAL 2009 for shunting tractors from 1990 onwards.

Nearest Humbrol is probably 132 (which Hornby suggest is RAL 2010), probably just need a tiny touch of yellow added to achieve RAL 2009.  The Humbrol table suggests Revell 330 and Vallejo 910 are similar to Humbrol 132.

As a newbie I know not of these sites. Where does one go to answer this sort of question? (I'll no doubt have similar questions in future.)

That's a good  question Jim.

I'm thinking about repainting a DB V100 loco to represent RhB no. 241.

Does anyone know where I can get decals for RhB please....

Well I just threw  something like "RhB Farben RAL" into google using my limited German knowledge that Farben = colours, and something like Farbtabelle is likely to be a colour-chart  :)  Searching for RAL colour numbers is a good bet as that's usually used for documenting official paint shades.

It takes a little sifting through the results.  Here's one of the links that says RAL2009 for shunting tractors - but note that this is one of those document harvesting websites that's covered with adverts and links to download stuff, so avoid those and concentrate on the document shown in the main window  :D
https://docplayer.org/30213799-Farbanstriche-und-beschriftungen-an-rhb-fahrzeugen.html

Just underneath the viewing window there is a download tab which will download a clean copy of the full document.  It's quite interesting as it has details of logos and typeface sizes etc. as well a paint colours.

Are these what you're looking for Gizzy?

I assume that 241 was yellow at some stage as they also do red decals.

Wow, thank you!

I've ordered some to try thank you.

AFAIK, 241 has always been orange, and is a similar loco to the DB V52 (I have the LGB model), but 242 and 243 are yellow, and although they are classed as Gm 4/4, they are a different machine....

I should / could have done that. Thank you for going to the trouble for me. (Warning about scraping sites duly noted - I've encountered those before, but browsing with ad-blocks and scripting disabled offers some protection.)

Hope you remembered to select the 1:160 option.  :D

I wonder why they do red decals for 241?  :hmmm:

I have had decals from Modellbahndecals.de and they are very good quality. I would say the only downside is that they need to be cut separately from the sheet.

It's a pity they don't do a wider range - only 7 from the RhB, and two of those are 241!

Yes I remembered to tick the box for 1/160 thanks!

Maybe the sheet is configured to do all the Gm 4/4 locos?

I will report back when I get them....

I find some of the smaller decals on the HO sheets from the likes of 'TL-Decals' are useful. There aren't many 1:160(150) decals for any of the Swiss railways.
