Next 18 expert required - help please
« on: May 11, 2020, 01:22:58 PM »
So, I've taken delivery of a Dapol class 33 which runs very nicely.

Next I've taken delivery of a Zimo MX618N18 from Coastal DCC.

With the blanking plug in the lights work as they should white front. red rear that change to match the direction of the loco.

Having fitted the chip the loco runs BUT the lights are proving to be a nightmare!

The lights (Hadlamp blinds and red lights)in the chip end (Forward) will, when turned on by F0, turn on and off depending upon the direction set by the controller as they should.

The rear (Reverse) end refuse to respond to F0 at all but F1 will turn on the headlamp blinds and F2 will turn on the red lamps.

How on earth do you program it so the lights simply turn on and off depending upon the direction set?

Isn't that the intended behaviour though?  Normally when coupled to a train the rear reds won't be on, only need those when running light.       People used to go to great effort to implement what Next18 now allows you to do "out of the box"

Whilst it is sort of prototypical, it's going to confuse the hell out of operators having some that do and some that don't automatically switch. It works as I would expect on dc so I'll be very disappointed if it won't do it on DCC.

Sounds like a bit of function remapping is required then.

does this thread help?

Er, one very large pot of very black coffee on order.

If I can translate that into SPROG talk I can probably sort it. If not, it's been one expensive mistake and a DCC chipped 33 will be back on the market soon and I'll be looking to purchase a earlier model green 33 for a repaint.

Either way, I think I've just bought my first and last next 18 chipped loco.

Thanks for the link though.

Hi,

You have a couple of choices.

You can remap F0 to control all the lights and make the rear lights directional, OR
you can remap F1 to control all the rear lights and make them directional. This will give more prototypical operation so that lights are only on at both ends when the loco is running light engine.

Sorry if my thread seems a bit over the top but I would have thought this would be a doddle with a Sprog and JMRI.

BTW most will view this as a step forward as it allows more prototypical operation.

John P

Hi,

To remap F1 to control the rear lights and make them directional

set CV35 to 12, CV36 to 0
CV127 to 2 and CV128 to 1

Assuming you've got a Sprog and JMRI:

1. Run JMRI, identify the decoder & open the decoder programmer.
2. Click on the "Function Map" tab.
You should see a list of all the functions F0-F12 and the associated output wire.
3. Click "Read Full sheet"
There will be ticks for Front and Rear light under F0(F) and F0(R).
The lights at the number 2 end of the loco should be on wires 3 & 2 (FO1 & FO2 - Function Output 1&2). There will be a tick for FO1 for F1 and FO2 for F2.
4. Untick the tick-boxes for Function 1 & function 2 and tick the ones associated with Forward Headlight and Reverse Headlight. One will be the white, the other the red.

5. Tick the boxes to allow F0(F) to control FO2, and F0(R) to control FO1.
Hopefully this will get the right lights working in the right direction, if they're not then swap F0(F) -> FO1 & F0(R)->FO2.

As John said,  doddle with JMRI+Sprog.    There will be at least half a dozen ways of doing the change, and any function key combination doing anything is possible.   So, write down clearly what you want to happen, then implement it, or seek help to implement it.

Rather than messing with CV's, learn how the JMRI interface works, to implement John's suggestion:

To change which keys control which outputs is on "Function Mapping" pane - jmri1.png
To change the direction behaviour of an output, use "lights" pane - jmri2.png

Next18 is a massive improvement on the six-pin plug.

This worked. I still need to turn on F0 as well as F1 but at least it works. What it does offer is a method of running prototypically at the head of a train  using just two buttons to control the lights instead of three. Thankyou.

At the end of the day, I'm a modeller, not a chip programmer. This is where, for me, DCC fails.
