Build Log for N gauge shuttle layout
« on: May 03, 2020, 11:38:06 PM »
I am not sure where this should be posted so I am trying it here for starters.

When I first joined, I described a small N gauge shuttle layout that I had acquired and that I was in the process of developing a control system for it. I also decided to document my progress on a build log where I could publish the controller schematics, system description and source code. I now think this build log might be of interest to some NGF members, either as a complete project or just parts of it. Is it worth posting on the forum? If so, under what heading should I post it?

Regards

Ron

Hi, don't worry about finding the most suitable place got your thread. The Mods will help find it an appropriate location.

It sounds like a interesting project and I'm sure there are plenty here that'd be interested to learn about it. It's something I'm interested in doing, but sometime in the future.

Post away!

It most certainly would be worth posting!!

The electronics section would be the place. Just start up a new topic there.

Post away! I'm into this sort of stuff, so I'm looking forward to seeing your posts!

I'm quite sure everything will well above my head but I'll be interested to know the capabilities of what's being designed

Hi Ron,

I'm looking forward to this, got to be honest that my layout will be pretty basic so little scope for automation, plus as I'm an apple user little scope for computer control as most of this seems to be windows based.

However electronics wizardry is really interesting to me - so post away..

Cheers Derek

install Windows on your Mac?? you can download kosher copies of Win10 from Microsoft , and To dual-boot between macOS and Windows, use Apple's Boot Camp. You might even find a useable Activation code somewhere..

I use a separate machine for windows 10, with a Win7 shell to hide the worst of win10 ,and have even learned to like it,  ( as well as MacOS) . And sometimes my Big Mac will format & manage hard discs that Win10 objects to ( and V/V). Useful as I refurbish old PCS / laptops for Charities.

Mr Bealman will be along soon to sing the virtues of  Arduinos, or look in the /Electronics section.

Hi Guys

This is the first installment just to whet your appetite. :beers:

The actual document will be a PDF file attached to a forum posting. This allows you to read the document at leisure and leaves the forum free for questions, discussions :veryangry: and hopefully answers.

That is the plan anyway and we all know what happens to them!!!

I'm not clever enough to navigate this website, but I have built an n guage layout that runs generally on a 75mm shelf.
i'm tinkering with it at the moment, but it will include automatic trains, voice announcements,  and backscene LED lighting... give me a month then hit me again.. I'll send you a video. p.s. It's all automatic, off one socket.. flip the switch and away it goes, while we and our friends, (70 +) will celebrate being covir-19 survivors!....
maybe you can come too?... I'm In Berkshire...
stay healthy... xx Chris

Hi Ron,

Perhaps add a glossary page at the back of the PDF to cover any abbreviations you use in the document.

But the first version is great, really looking forward to more instalments as it gets built.

Hi Railwaygun,

Have thought about doing that a few times in the past to make life easier for certain things. But Iíve always backed away as I just want Apple os on there. Because the layout is in the loft and the iMac is in my dining room and itís a 27íí model too I donít want to put it up there as I use it for photo processing and need easy access in reality.

Have often thought about a small windows based laptop - but again if I did buy a laptop Iíd probably end up going apple there too lol ..

Cheers Derek

iTrain works on Mac OS and would be my preferred choice, Mac or not. Itís what I use these days and it comes with a 2 month trial of the full software

Iíve got Windows 10 as a dual boot option on one of my Macs but, to be honest, I very rarely use it, especially not for trains!

Hi Derek

Good idea. Can I ask why you made the suggestion? Was it because it might be helpful in the future or was it because you found some terminology difficult to understand?

If it is the latter then I am concerned a glossary would become bigger than the article itself. I will still do a glossary anyway but since I have been in an Electronics environment for more than 60years, I find it difficult to know the boundaries between what a 'normal' person does and does not know about electronics.

I think this thread would be a useful platform for discussing such difficulties and so Guys. (and Gals if there are any), if there is anything in my write-ups that you do not understand, post your questions here and we can get them sorted.

Ron
