KR Models resurrects DJM ‘King’ and ‘Shark’
« on: February 03, 2020, 03:51:35 PM »
KR Models have apparently bought the DJM CAD for the Shark and GWR King.
https://www.world-of-railways.co.uk/news/kr-models-resurrects-king-and-shark-for-n-gauge/

They're asking for constructive feedback on the CAD...

Thanks for the link, but looks like the host has "lost" the original information.

Poor form if that’s true. When Keith showed the King CAD on FB a lot of people questioned the similarity and he flat denied it was anything to do with DJM. No issues with resurrecting it, but why not admit to that?!

Hi

It was indeed however on RMWeb they have hidden all the threads to do with the announcement while they do some investigations. As RMWeb is owned I believe by BRM or its publishers might explain why the above page has disappeared.

Cheers

I suspect that those projects will be a poisoned challice for some time to come. It's not going to be easy either as KR don't have a track record of any finished projects yet, at least none that I'm aware of.

I am pretty sure the Shark got as far as deco samples, so clearly the tooling remains in limbo along with that of the Clayton (and presumably Mermaid) which is a shame.

That is interesting!

There's a cached version of the original thread at the time of the King announcement, here, but even that thread has now gone.

KR Models website just says "We'll be open real soon!". "New website on the way".

To my eye it is different CAD or took a different path form a very early stage of the DJM CAD, sufficient to be original.

That's not to say it does not have a common origin and possibly the same designer.

Too much is different and the differences I see as I see it have come from the early drafts of the design so this is something new.

Having said this even if its new what track record does KR have to give us confidence.

Another project announcer and as yet fails to deliver on them all.

KR claims to be a models for modellers by modellers type of business yet it just appears to be another one very good at getting CAD drawings shown to the world and nothing coming to fruition.

KR could be exactly the same as the previous content owner, let's face it they haven't got a shelf full of top spec products that have sold by the truckload. Yes everyone has to start somewhere to get a name but after everything that's gone wrong with crowdfunding I think many people are happy to not bother with unheard of, unproven companies.

Theres better well established companies that could of bought these toolings and CAD but clearly haven't so I think that says something.

I think these 2 projects are too bitterly intertwined with a certain other company to win  support.

None of KR's offered projects will see the light of day if they are not sufficiently subscribed to.
The GT3 failed to attract enough interest in N. They culled it.
Then quite recently we had the Fell Diesel.
Now we may get a King and a Shark, without even waiting for the Fell to have enough interest.
But the point is we have seen nothing other than CADs or photographs.
Anyone can do that.

Even Hattons with their track record in producing contracted models has not yet got enough interest in the Beyer Garratt for it to go to die production.

I'm not going to get excited about any of these, and I just hope that they don't bag something southern that I do want, as that will really put the mockers on me ever getting one, until they demonstrate they are a viable business in N. It is not easy in N. It is not just a clone market of OO but smaller. Modellers seem to have different wants, and there are a lot more mainstream locos still to be produced in N.

Best
Bob

KR Models have shown a working version of the OO Gauge GT3, so have made some progress to having produced an actual model. They didn't get sufficient interest for the N Gauge version to go ahead, hardly their fault (except for perhaps lack of publicity).

The article I linked to said that the King and Shark were from DJM's CAD following negotiations with the factory.

Personally, following the DJM debacle I think any new names asking for money upfront for the model that doesn't exist is in for a hard time. Even established names like Revolution have struggled with steam/transition era models.

Honestly,

It was a matter of time before these CADs resurfaced from somewhere, KR Models isn't one I would have expected, that been said with the speed the announcement appeared and disappeared was this a case of trying to run before he can walk and announce he has them when he may not have crossed the t's and dotted the i's to ensure they are "actually" his property to do with as he pleases.

Should they be his and OK to use then well the King or Shark may see the light of day sooner than I expected if I was been honest. But honestly so far all I have seen from KR Models is well a repeat of DJM - Lots of pretty pictures and a single EP model to "prove" things and well we all know where that road went!

This isn't good as DJM (fame or infamy your call) was known in modelling circles where as this bloke was / is a total unknown, in my opinion he say he hs enough now to do the GT3 in OO so get on with it and make a good model to prove the doubters wrong and then maybe look at further projects!
