PI RATA SBB 0-4-0 shunter DCC ready
« on: January 30, 2020, 03:20:05 PM »
I've just come across these delightful 0-4-0 SBB shunters from a firm I have never head of before - PI RATA.
It almost looks like this is a Revolution/Sonic type small player based in Italy.

https://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/Pirate-2136-Diesel-Locomotive-SBB-Tm-IV-Red-Brick-Scale-N/273787018033?epid=26025319978&hash=item3fbefa5b31:g:IuAAAOSwejNcoGh-

And it is on the Salento railroad site also

https://www.salentorailroad.it/it/brands/pi.r.a.t.a./

Would be a useful chassis for an industrial loco with a British flavour (and an expensive one) or even one of our early 0-4-0 BR shunters, but has anyone else ever heard of these guys?

Best
Bob

As your link shows Bob there are three variants of this fine little shutter available.

I’ve had one of these on my wish list for some time now and just need to convince the Chief Accountant that such a tiny little loco is worth the price.

This favourite seller of mine shows the other two styles:

Link to their 2019 catalogue, which shows plenty of their similar shutters as well as other models.

No thread hijack intended, but the link above is part of the wider extensive collection of catalogues the webpage covers, including the 2020 catalogue from PiRATA.

Search possible by manufacturer and year:

I have one of their Swiss RhB coaches, a Restaurant car. It was a quite expensive purchase direct from Italy

Hard to tell it apart from the Kato product....

An interesting company.
They seem to make their own coaches and freight cars in plastic.

Some of their limited edition locos are in plastic on an Arnold donor chassis and the little shunter is a resin mould with metal features on a donor Arnold chassis, as far as I can make out from the catalogues.

That's an expensive way of getting the chassis to try it out on a UK style body, but I'd like to see if it could be used for e.g. a class 01 or 02 shunter, perhaps? Or one of the even earlier 0-4-0 designs that can be so charming.

I've admired their offerings at the Stuttgart show, some are quite expensive but limited editions.  Given Italian and Swiss Railways aren't my main thing I've yet to buy anything from them  They're great guys though, and I do have a Pirata beanie hat  :D

If they are using the KOF 0-4-0 chassis as the starting point for this loco, you can get that for £50, and it is about the same length as a class 01 shunter....
Mad crazy thoughts....Alex Rockey where is that lad gone?

Köf III basis by the look of it (Köf II would be too small/short?), in which case as well as Arnold you also have the old Ibertren model as a possible donor chassis - it's actually not bad and they do turn up cheap sometimes.  If you want a Köf II then Arnold or Minitrix offer those.

First time I heard of them was when I bought some of their Italian passenger coaches when I was in Menzels Lokschuppen in Dusseldorf a few years back. Very nice models and a brilliant shop.

So in response to the original question yes they are an established producer/manufacturer and don't be afraid to order something if you really want it.

Its a bit 'round in circles' to think of these models as a chassis donor as they are specialist 'limited edition' models, not only that but the chassis is a donor to Pirata from another manufacturer. I got the original red version about 6 years ago now.

The bodies are over scale. I was somewhat disappointed to discover this having paid nearly 200 quid  even back then
