Tomix Track Cleaning Car
« on: January 23, 2020, 02:05:22 AM »
Just converted my track cleaner to DCC - my first ever soldered DCC job, and surprisingly easy! I followed this excellent illustrated guide;
http://my-miniature-worlds.blogspot.com/2018/01/tomix-n-scale-cleaning-car-dcc.html  :thumbsup:

Now to start using it. Instructions say to only use 6401 Tomix cleaner, but I wonder if anyone has used it with IPA? More readily available and I already use it with manual cleaning pads.
 :worried:

I'm sure IPA will be fine.

WARNING Try a drop of whatever cleaning fluid on a part of the plastic body that doesnít show ,I used a track  fluid and it melted the very minute hole that it drips out of .Unfortunately I was so angry I threw the bottle away and I canít remember which type it was ,So BEWARE and test first .
I allso found that itís a fantastic vacuum cleaner but not that efficient as a track cleaner anyway .I use the Ten Commandments track cleaner and a drop of I P A .

IPA destroyed mine - the plastic cracked and it fell apart. I had the translucent black plastic one. The others may be more resistant.

It was utterly useless before that though, so no huge loss.

I borrowed one from within our area group and I must confess that I was very sceptical but after running it around the helices; I'm a convert.  I can't remember if I used IPA though.

Regardless, I was most impressed.

Thank you for your comments. I have also just purchased a CMX "Clean Machine", which will withstand just about any cleaning fluid. I think I will apply IPA with the CMX and only use the Tomix for the vacuum and dry polishing modes!  ;)

glue a small flat super magnet under the waggon - it picks up the bits that other locos leave behind!

Old thread I know but thought I'd chip in. Avoid ipa, I used it once, went to use the cleaner for next clean up only to find it in pieces in side the box. I had used a small amount and made sure it was empty before I put it away (or did I :-[)
