Just about the worst ever Airfix kit I've ever bought

a few years ago I bought the Airfix 1:72 Vulcan, in the XH558 Vulcan to the sky version.

ok, supporting the most Iconic a/c ever, and one under which I, and a/d Rex, often sheltered from the Lincolnshire rain, what a superb umbrella 

a year or so later, bought another one, still not having built the first one, with plans for one in camo, and one in anti-flash white.

finally got around to building the first one ......



flash everywhere, parts don't fit [ must buy more filler ] what a load of 

luckily, I bought a set of files a while ago, they are very necessary for this kit to clean up the parts.

am I the only one to get this kit in such a poor condition ?

I have not, yet, summoned up the courage to open the second kit to see if it is as bad.

anyone have any idea if / when Airfix intend to release the new tooling of this kit ?

I have checked my Victor B.2 and K.2 / SR.2 kits, recently bought, and am awaiting the Valiant I snagged recently. and certainly the quality of the Victors is superb, hopefully the Valliant will be as good.

so, do I unload the second Vulcan on some unsuspecting person, use it as a practice model, or what.

oh to be able to produce the three V's in a decent model, and add the tanker as well.

I keep telling you SPEND SOME MONEY!!!!! 

They are all quite bad, and filler will become your best friend with this. The good thing is this is the very worst it possibly could be. The Valiant is fantastic as is the Nimrod and the Victor B2 is a brand new tooling.

It will build into a decent model but I would seriously recommend getting as many aftermarket parts for it. Hannants and Eduard detailing bits will make it much much better.

Hannants Vulcan intakes are about £20 which you think, nah that's too expensive but half a tube of Perfect Putty and wet n dry wrapped round an 8mm dowl to get them smooth ain't much fun!!!

No idea on new tooling for it, the Harrier GR3 was meant to of been out by now, the current one  now that really is a bad kit!!!!

Practice on this one, get yourself a full detailing kit and build the other one with all the extras, you'll happily bin the first build once you see how many poor quality parts from airfix you get to throw away.

Then once you've built the other 2 see if Airfix can update regarding a new tooling if not buy another and build your tanker with the skillset learnt from previous 2

Maybe an "anti-flash" kit of the Vulcan won't have as many moulding problems???

You're not alone. The original Airfix Vulcan is renowned for being a world of pain.

Close behind is the Airfix Buccaneer.

The new tool Vulcan is due in May I think. It was announced at Telford this month.

Airfix, Revell, Matchbox, et al would send us new kits for review when I was making models for the RAF Museum Hendon. They would often ask us to make one up for their advertisement shots.

I recall not being at all impressed with the Vulcan. The one we returned for use in adverts, was mostly a vacu-form kit from a small Welsh outfit with the Airfix undercarriage and decals. But you didn't hear that from me.
