Revolution Trains - Class A Tanker and MTV Zander Box Wagon
« on: September 14, 2019, 09:19:07 AM »
Class A tanker and MTV Zander box wagon.

Revolution is confirming that 2020 will see the much-requested Class A tanks offered for transition era modellers to run alongside their existing Class B models.

The wagons share the same chassis, but the Class A tankers have a longer barrel as they were used for lighter fuels, so more can be carried for the same gross weight.

Esso, Mobil and Stavely Chemicals liveries are expected to be offered.

In the 1970s many tanker wagons were rendered obsolete by more advanced versions, and their chassis were reused on box wagons for carrying minerals and ballast.  Coded MTV and, in departmental use known as Zanders, Revolution is also offering this variant in BR brown and CE Dutch liveries.

As a transition modeller, my wallet and I are pleased to see just one 'want' in all the announcements today, that being the class A tank.
In amongst 2 x 56xx locos, Sturgeons, Cemflos and at least 1 class 128 (when we can order them) it's nice to see other era modellers getting a go ;)

I used to see loads of these around in the 1980s.  Ideal for the BR Blue/Railfreight Grey era modeller 8)

Class A's are a logical follow on from the B's and I would think will have a very wide appeal amongst modellers. I will certainly put my name down for a short rake, hopefully they will have a tad less weight in them then the B's have.

Using the chassis yet again for a further model in the form of the Zander is really sweating the assets!

As an aside, any news on when books will open for the 128s?

I will definitely be putting in an order for the Class A tanks, to compliment my Class B's.

However, my knowledge of the prototype is minimal....

Will these models be distinguishable from the Class B's?

Same chassis but the barrel is longer and will be grey/silver to denote class A liquids.

At least one Zander survived to be branded by Mainline (base tatty Dutch livery). IIRC that was around 1996.

Cheers Mike

Will that be one of the livery options Mike? :D

Have you decided on the Class A Tank liveries yet?
I can think of: (in date order)

Original silver + ESSO logo and text
Grey + ESSO logo and text
Grey plus ESSO logo no text
Grey post TOPS no logo no text
Chipman Weed Control Train Green (1976) - might be challenging to get the factory to do a short run of four different wagons unless these were very popular, but they are quite jazzy and ran over the SR and WR.

The weed killer train ran with (for example) a Bullied BTK (Farish with relatively few mods), a Maunsell BCK (Dapol with high window / cab end /spray mods), SR Scenery Van (you could use a Farish SR bogie B Utility Van if you were not fussy) and a Farish PMV so eminently doable. Based at Horsham but quite well travelled over the SR and WR, and an earlier weed killing train to the Farish 1990s class 20/9 version.

The actual coaches were:
99007 ex S3724S, Maunsell BTK dia 2105, built 1931
99008 ex S5644S, Maunsell CK dia 2304, built 1931
99009 ex S6699S, Maunsell BCK dia 2403, built 1935
99010 ex S4035S, Bulleid BTK dia 2123, built 1950
99014 ex S4600S, SR design GUV dia 3182, built 1949
99015 ex S4589S, SR design GUV dia 3182, built 1949

I think these were used in two weed killing trains.

Best
Bob
