BLS Type 3 to the Sea 10/08/2019
« on: July 28, 2019, 06:34:53 PM »
This tour is open for non-member bookings.

The Branch Line Society is delighted to announce a low flying and highly unusual railtour from Crewe to Portsmouth and return, in conjunction with our partners Hovertravel http://www.hovertravel.co.uk.

Upon arrival at the City of Portsmouth, a dynamic and vibrant waterfront city packed with great reasons to visit. Ideally situated on the south coast of England, the UK’s only island city is ideal for a visit by the Branch Line Society. There are lots to do in Portsmouth, museums, two cathedrals, and it is the gateway to the Isle of Wight by the world’s only commercial hovercraft.

Hovertravel provides the fastest Isle of Wight ferry route across the Solent and is the world's only year round passenger hovercraft service. The fully accessible 78 seater passenger ferry service takes you directly to the shore at Southsea or Ryde in just 10 minutes, flying across the water. Offering a regular service to and from the Isle of Wight from Portsmouth, Hovertravel carries approx. 800,000 passengers per year, in addition offering private hire with customised itineraries for corporate awaydays, charters, weddings or filming opportunities for your full hovercraft experience.

Our train will be formed of Mark 1 coaching stock from West Coast Railways (WCR) and features a total of three WCR Class 37s! The charter will travel from the North West with pick-ups on the edge of the Midlands and London before heading to Portsmouth Harbour.

In typical style, unusual track has been requested (including the Baker-level Coventry North Yard No 1 Road) along with four hours at our destination. With thanks to our travel partners Hovertravel we will offer a number of special off train options, also in our unique style! With one of the options, new water will be available with a Hovercraft charter going off booked service route to provide a connection to Lee-on-the-Solent and the Hovercraft Museum!

Our special train will be raising funds for the Royal National Lifeboat Institution (RNLI), who save lives at sea and along our shores 24 hours a day, 365 days a year.

There will be a selection of hand pulled real ales to enjoy, a RNLI Souvenir / Gift shop, a charity raffle and an original nameplate auction, along with a host of other surprises! Of course, there will be a fully stocked Buffet Car with a wide range of hot snacks, sandwiches and hot / cold drinks to enjoy along the way.

We expect two Class 37s to lead to Portsmouth, with one on the rear. Note the locos will be reformed during the break at Eastleigh to provide a different pairing for the return journey. Our requested route is as follows:

Crewe P5 (PU 05.23) – Stafford P4 (PU 06.15) – Colwich Jn Up Slow – Curborough Jn Up Fast – Amington UF to US – Nuneaton P5 (PU 07.05) – Rugby – Milton Keynes – Watford Junction P9 (PU 09.10) – Wembley European Freight Operating Centre (No 2 Reception and Departure requested) – Willesden No 7 Jn – Acton Wells Jn – South Acton Jn – Kew East Jn – Virginia Water – Woking – Brookwood DS to DF – Basingstoke – Wallers Ash Loop – Shawford P3 – Eastleigh Down Carriage Sidings – Botley – Cosham Jn – Fratton P3 – Portsmouth & Southsea P2 (SD 12.50) – Portsmouth Harbour P3 (SD 12.56).

Bit of an odd introduction if you don't mind me saying @DP2  ???

It's an interesting special to Portsmouth where I grew up as a kid but a big pity that it starts from Crewe rather than York, Leeds or Doncaster otherwise I might have been interested!

I think you’re being over generous in calling that an introduction!

I flipped between 'advertisement' and 'introduction' for a while before settling. :D
