Decals/transfers for Kit 24 BR Horse Box
« on: July 13, 2019, 11:41:49 AM »
Hi, I just received my first N gauge rolling stock kit, Kit 24 BR Horse Box and it looks great.  Does anyone have any idea where I can source some decals/transfers for when I complete it.  Also is the recommended halfords aerosol preferable to using the Railmatch colour?  I do have an airbrush but I am really a novice.  All advice warmly welcomed.

Hi John,

No decals - yet.

What colour are you wanting to finish the kit off with?

For BR Coach Maroon I use Halfords Vauxhall Burgundy Red over a grey primer.

Thanks

Hi Phil, thanks for the reply.  I am going to finish with BR Maroon, and I will follow your suggestion, I already have Halfords grey primer.

Cheers,
John

Hi
If the excellent original NGS  sheet is not available, you could use Cambridge Custom Transfers sheet BL163. Remember to order 2mm.

Beware this sheet also has transfers for other NPCStock- you may start to make vehicles just to use them up.

I find much more finesse in using an airbrush as opposed to Rattle Cans -- Just a personal opinion.

Only just spotted this thread -- thanks to the Journal, I don't get much time to browse any more!

But in any event, Precision Decals ran me up the transfers I needed for my horsebox. Admittedly, I was doing the BR blue departmental conversion, but John Peck is very quick at making custom orders. I find his decals by far the best I've tried, and he always sends me lots of 'spares' in case I make mistakes.

@BRMan -- It's a nice kit, but I messed it up a bit by trying to be too clever. I wanted to make up the body separately from the chassis, so I could paint each separately. That's really not an option. Follow the instructions to the letter, otherwise you'll find getting the chassis right incredibly difficult!

Cheers, NeMo

Both Messers Isherwood and Peck have always given me excellent service too. Just to endorse the previous message.

Thanks! It's a very cruel photo -- the real thing doesn't look quite so rough!

The horsebox kit is an overlooked kit. My aim in building the kit was to produce a simple modification of the kit (there's a square plastic exhaust on the roof, just visible in this photo) and show how this kit could be used by modellers of the BR blue era. This was a generator van, but other horseboxes ended up as stores (thanks to the really big doors) and even mess vans (they were quite roomy inside).

Don't get me wrong about the kit being "difficult"; it really isn't. It's a joy to put together, for the most part, though some of the tiny details on the chassis, like the footsteps, are really fiddly and arguably not worth it.

Cheers, NeMo

Hi all,

In ref to the NGS/Ex Modelmaster range of decals and nameplates....

Having recovered from my heart attack, I am hoping to stay fit enough to restart sorting out the range after the St Andrews Exhibition on the 17th and 18th August.

I will be getting through the process as quickly as possible.

Thanks

On a slightly different but related subject, I have a Grafar Horsebox NR-14 which I have in BR Maroon and want to know which Diagram design it is so that I can attach the appropriate decals from the sheet I have.  I will post an image when I have worked out how to do it!

Hmm, I appear to be having some problems with the image orientation.  Any guidance would be welcomed.  I tried to obvious to rotate the original and it didn't help.

Hi BRman,

From memory the drawing sent to Peter Farish was of the LMS horse box.
